Vrehx

I tried to pay attention to my strike team as we ate. They went on and on about the planet, the people, the wild forest, the creatures.

My mind wandered back to Jeneva with every topic.

“Hey, Vrehx, what do you think?” Axtin piped up.

I had no idea what he was talking about. I sat there, blinking at him. Axtin shrugged, and they carried on with their conversation.

I caught a snippet, though. Now they were discussing the ship’s food quality. I was glad I’d missed it.

The food was terrible and everybody knew it.

Why keep talking about it?

I abruptly got up and walked away, bored. The mess hall was sterile and uninviting, and I wasn’t hungry anyway.

There was only one person I wanted to speak to.

I went to my quarters to find Jeneva, but she wasn’t there.

Where the srell is she?

I turned down another corridor. They all looked the same, only years serving on various ships kept me from being disoriented.

My brain conjured an image of her wandering aimlessly. There were computers and other crewmen to ask for directions, but what if she didn’t know that? What if they frightened her?

I pictured a small and helpless creature, lost and vulnerable to danger.

A small part of my mind laughed at that, but I couldn’t let the image go.

She couldn’t have gone far. I lowered the barricade in my mind and sought her out. A wave of despair, anger, and a glimmer of hope hit me.

Something was wrong.

I blinked back the initial shock and sped down the corridor.

What was she doing on the bridge?

The tightness in my chest eased as I saw her at a spare terminal in the far corner. Her jacket hung over the seat, and the skintight sleeveless work shirt revealed her shape.

Not the hard muscles and sharp angles of my people. She was soft, her gentle curves shifting with every breath she took.

Different.

Alluring.

A quiet snort came from Karzin’s station, but I ignored him to find out what had caused such a mix of emotions from Jeneva.

She sat in front of the monitor with a look of total concentration on her face, as if she were born to operate the systems. I could tell she knew I was there, but she didn’t acknowledge me until I stood directly behind her.

“Look at this,” she said without turning around. “I think it’s what we need to get moving.”

I leaned down and looked over her shoulder to see what she had found and blinked.

It was a map showing the nadrium signature. That was the hope I felt from her.

Her emotions seemed a little backwards. If I had discovered something like that, I would be overjoyed. What was the problem?

Always a mystery with her. Her mind was still open to mine, tempting me to take a quick peek.

The sister again. I should have known. Jeneva grieved for a lost connection with the only family she had left. And she blamed herself for it.

Ridiculous, but the issue would have to wait.

I peered over her shoulder to study the location of the signature.
