Ham-nia
Ham kâ Win Saik, translated from the Selkânam tongue, means those who have gone. In funeral laments the phrase took the place of the name of the dead, which could not be spoken. From an old Selkânam song about the departed: I stand in the footsteps of those who are gone. I believe that I come from those who are gone. Who are here no more. Who have left and gone away. And so I sing to Ham-nia, to the western skies.
The little people my mother talked about, the ones who sent messages in code with the flash of their mirrorsâthis is who they are: Dwellers in the western skies. Those who are here no more. Those who have left and gone away.
