Chapter 17

Willow Valerian—mother to the most wanted criminal in all of Alchea—sat in a quiet room with High General Henna Tyran. The general was as cold as the room; Willow rubbed her arms to keep warm. When she’d set out that morning, she hadn’t expected to be detained and questioned by the Alchean guard.

They had shown her the evidence, but Willow knew Chrys too well to believe that he was guilty. At his core, he was a good man. Of course, she’d never fully accepted the stories of the Apogee’s murderous rampage during the War of the Wastelands either. The man she raised would fight to protect, but never with glee.

General Henna sat across the table, her white Alirian hair messily covering the side of her face. Her eyes were red with fatigue, but she continued the questioning. “Willow, you have to give us something. You were there with them at the temple and spent the previous night in their home. There’s nothing I can do for you if you won’t help.”

“Maybe you should ask Jurius,” Willow said.

“And what is that supposed to mean?”

“Chrys is innocent.” Willow was steel.

The truth was that it looked really bad. A dead temple worker and two guards that testified that Chrys left with the priest willingly? If she didn’t know Jurius’ secret, she might have been convinced. But she did know, and she knew that she couldn’t trust anyone. Chrys was worried for his family’s safety and for Willow’s in turn. And now here she sat, being interrogated by one of the Great Lord’s high generals under suspicion of aiding a criminal. There was a connection, but she couldn’t figure it out.

A knock came at the door.

General Henna walked over to answer. There were whispers and confusing hand gestures as the man on the other side explained something to the high general. She turned around, closing the door again as she walked back to the table. “They found Chrys. He’s dead.”

Willow flinched.

“Tell me who Father Xalan really is and why they were going to the Fairenwild.”

Willow stared, unable to process the words. “He’s not dead.”

Henna sighed. “Jurius caught up with him at the border. There was a fight. They captured the priest, but Chromawolves came out of the trees and started ripping men apart. We have ten men unaccounted for. Chrys, Iriel, and the baby were right next to those men.”

“LIAR!” Willow screamed, slamming her fists down on the table.

“Sit down.” Henna rubbed her eyes. “I’m not here to feed you lies. I just want to know why. Why did he kill the temple worker? Who is the priest? Where were they going? You’ve been a respected woman for many years, but you have to understand that your life is on the line for collusion. Malachus wants answers. He liked your son. Trusted him more than the rest of us. A betrayal like this is as deep as they come. So, whether you tell us the truth or not, the priest will. His questioning will be far less diplomatic.
