The meeting was held in the Krewe’s largest conference room. Arriving, Patrick greeted Colleen, Mark, and Ragnar, as he expected them to be there. He was surprised to see Megan was there, too. Of course, he’d known both his sisters had become friends with the ghost of Alfie Parker, and he’d been waiting to hear from Megan to see if she had learned more than Angela had garnered about Alfie’s last stand or Susie.

Naturally, the dogs were there—all three of them. Red, Hugo, and Bry-bo. They were happy to greet each other and accept whatever attention and appreciation they might from friends and strangers alike. But when the meeting began, they sat at attention as if taking in every word.

There were a few representatives from local area police as well as other FBI agents. The case, of course, was far-reaching, though Alfie Parker himself was not in attendance.

Jackson and Angela both spoke. Jackson brought the room up on the case history. Both police and FBI had been involved when a complex of houses had been raided; much of the information that had led them down the right path had come from Sergeant Alfred Parker. He had gained his information through a young woman he had arrested—and then helped into a halfway house. At the time, they found a massive stash of arms and documents that detailed crimes related to murder for hire, drug trafficking, and more.

Alfred Parker and two other officers had been killed. So had the majority of the gunmen who had preferred death to capture by law enforcement. Those they had in custody informed them that John Smith had been at the head of the operation.

John Smith had not been found. Susie had disappeared; she had not been at the complex.

Angela stepped in to speak. She had researched Alfie’s notes on Susie and the discoveries he had made through her, and she got everyone up to speed on the details. While the case involving John Smith and Susie had grown cold, they had come to theorize the man known as John Smith was still active and was recruiting a small army of gunmen to manage his criminal enterprises, including the recent Embracer murders and those involved. The name John Smith had come up in recent interviews and they had an image of a man calling himself by that name.

“We had suspected Rory Ayers, incarcerated for attempted murder in the Embracer case, to be this man,” Jackson said. “It’s possible he was, but at this time, he’s in a coma. One of his lieutenants, Marie Donnell, has changed her tune about being protected, which indicates he might be the man we’re looking for. We are seeking money trails, still searching for victims, and since we don’t know if Rory Ayers is John Smith, we’re on high alert. We have found large sums in offshore accounts, but since Rory Ayers has gone into a coma—presumed suicide attempt, though under suspicious circumstances—we know he’s not manipulating the money...not anymore, at least.
