For the first time in our work, ethical thinking and talking took primacy over scientific reasoning as a driver of decisions and actions. The El Valor group, by willingly engaging in discourse to critically address the details and implications of two novel areas of scientific inquiry, demonstrated how the exercise of choice could become an integral part of our research. It also created an opportunity for parents, childcare professionals, and administrators to share their perspectives on both topics with academics, and achieve group consensus.

And Jennings was right, of course: El Valor was “laying the groundwork for a more inclusive and extensive project.” That would take the form of the Young Citizens programs in Chicago, Cambridge, and Tanzania.
