Chapter Eleven
“How about coffee? And I made cookies.”
“I saw them, and, yes, I’ll have both,” he says with a laugh. He grabs his dish and mine and heads to the sink. “Why don’t we take it to the porch? There doesn’t seem to be anybody out there right now.”
“Oh, I’d love that.” I always would rather be outside than in. We sit on the wicker chairs out front and drink coffee, eat cookies, and savor the spring evening. A breeze is blowing his hair just a little. I look at him and pull a small blanket around my legs, as it is cooling down.
“You okay, Babs? Want another blanket?” he asks and reaches over to get a small one next to him.
Now those beer-bottle-brown eyes are on mine, and I say, “No … I mean, yes. I’m okay.” Those eyes start to twinkle, and a small smile appears on his lips and my flame is back! I think he knows he unnerves me sometimes. He probably even knows about the flame!
“We could go inside and get under a blanket if you want to,” he says quietly.
It’s that quiet voice that gets me, and that stare is getting rather intense. I know I looked at his lips. What I wouldn’t give to jump him right here on the porch and mess up that hair a little.
“A blanket, inside?” I ask slowly like a space cadet. All I can think of is his arms around me and just how good that would feel.
“And you can tell me all about your day at the courthouse.”
“Courthouse?” I am now in a confused state and probably look like the dental receptionist in her state of trance.
“You know, the Cecil County Courthouse, and then about your visit to the shop where the jacket was, like you briefly mentioned at dinner?” He’s toying with me and he knows I’m falling apart here. And he still has that smile on his face to boot.
A cool breeze hits my face, and thankfully I come to my senses! “The courthouse!” I say with great revelation. “Yes! I was successful there and with the guy at the sign shop as well.”
“Tell me about that,” he says quietly again, still with the smile!
“Okay!” I throw the blanket off as I am now having what really seems like a hot flash. “The courthouse!”
“Yes.” His eyes are still twinkling.
“Okay, well, I went to the courthouse. I got all dressed up thinking I would have to substantiate just why I was there. I had a business card with me and all, you know, and I got past the guy at the front desk who told me those files weren’t online yet, so I had to go to the docket books first and get the book and page number and then go to those books, wrestle those babies that must weigh at least thirty pounds, so I had trouble, you know?”
“Okay,” he says and takes another sip of coffee
“Then, I wrote it all down, and it’s
