Chapter Fifteen

Kit slammed her fists into the punching bag, throwing jabs and hooks until her shoulders burned with exertion.

“Okay! Enough!” Sian let go of the bag and shook out her arms and rolled her neck. “You’re going to punch through that bag and hit me in the face.”

The image of Clio in bed with Sian on top of her flashed in her mind, and she considered the option of hitting her in the face after all.

“Hey now.” Sian backed up. “I’ve seen that look enough times to know you don’t want to go there.”

Kit blew out a frustrated breath and held her hands up in surrender. “Sorry.” She flopped onto a workout mat and stared at the ceiling. “Eating moldy cheese with a toothpick would be more fun than trying to figure out women.”

Sian sat on the mat next to her and started to stretch. “Truer words were never said. I take it you’ve pissed her off somehow?”

Kit turned to look at her. “Obviously. Are you in love with her?”

Sian continued to stretch and didn’t make eye contact. “That would be stupid. I’m an employee, nothing more.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.” Kit rolled up and started stretching too, before she began to stiffen up.

“Only an idiot wouldn’t fall in love with Clio. And I’m not an idiot.” She shook her head and stretched her triceps. “But she doesn’t feel the same way, and it’s not like there’s any question of that. She wears her heart on her sleeve. If she felt the same, I’d already be on my knees proposing.”

“Damn.” Kit wasn’t sure what to say. It wasn’t like she could admit—

“I assume you slept with her and then you somehow fucked things up.” Sian looked at her pointedly this time. “Did you hurt her?”

“Dude, you don’t want to hear this.” Kit rolled onto her back to stretch her quads. She’d kicked the hell out of the bag too.

“Probably not. But I do want to know she’s okay and what to expect when we fly out tomorrow.” She sat cross-legged and looked at Kit. “I like you, but she’ll always come first for me. What happened?”

“I don’t know. I heard her singing at this club, and then she sat with me and my friends, and then things just got out of hand, and we ended up at her place.” She got it out in a rush, omitting details.

Sian waved her on. “And?”

“And things were great. In the morning I told her how much I was enjoying doing the show with her.”

Sian’s eyes narrowed. “She wouldn’t get upset about that, and I have no question it was you who upset her. What else?”

Kit got up and headed toward the locker room. “I might have said she could stop doing that stupid show of hers and do something more important.”

Sian slammed her locker shut and looked at Kit incredulously. “You’re fucking kidding me? How would you have felt if she said something like that to you?”

“But my show is important. Hers is…dumb.”

“Wow.” Sian backed away with her towel and wash bag in hand.
