Kate didn’t arrive for another hour. Steve met her outside Heather’s door, unsure of how warm a reception to give or what to expect. The answer came when she gave him a peck on the cheek. He thought it a suitable compromise between her grabbing an awkward hand thrust into space and a more intimate hug. The light scent of her perfume brought back memories of being with her. She hadn’t switched to something more overpowering, which pleased him.

“You’re looking fit,” said Kate. “Spending time on the treadmill?”

“Not as much as I need to. Let’s get inside before this heat melts both of us.” He punched a series of buttons on Heather’s lock, heard the door click, and pushed it open. “I’ll send you a text with the code. How many suitcases?”

“Two, and a backpack with my computer and the rest of my traveling office. I’ll roll the first one to you and you can lead the way to my room.”

“It’s easy to find. The first door on the right past the living room. The guest bathroom is across the hall.”

“Where’s Max?”

“On the couch when I left my condo. He’ll make his grand entrance after he yawns, stretches, and takes a cat bath. If you don’t want him in bed with you tonight, you’ll need to shut your door.”

“This is his house. If he can stand me, I’d love to have a furry bed partner.”

Steve rolled the first suitcase into the spare bedroom and hoisted it onto the queen size bed. “Do you need help with the second one?”

“I gave you the heaviest of the two. This room is perfect.”

Steve nodded. “The condo has a simple layout. Explore. There are drinks, fresh fruit and yogurt in the refrigerator. Everything in the freezer and pantry in both condos is fair game. Did they feed you on the plane?”

“You set the bar high by getting me a first-class seat. The meal exceeded my expectations. I may not need to eat tonight.”

Steve took a step toward the bedroom door. “Thanks so much for coming.”

Her hand rested on his arm. “Thank you for asking. I can’t believe this is our third adventure together. I hope Heather doesn’t think I’m trying to take her place.”

“She called today, and we talked about that very thing. I hope this doesn’t come out wrong, but she’ll always be the first person I call to help solve a murder.”

Kate gave her trademark laugh that sounded like joy spilling out of a bottle. “I can’t even drive as good as she can.”

“Few people can. She took extra lessons from a Formula One driver after her police training.” Steve paused. “I’ll let you get freshened up. Come next door whenever you're ready. We have plenty of time before we talk to a person of interest this evening.”

“How exciting. A person of interest.”

“That’s the plan. Her name is Cindy Green. I believe she could be a disgruntled employee, but I want to find out for sure.”

The sound of the kitty door flapping shut reached Steve’s ears.
