Two Vishnu avatars—Rama and Parashurama—exist at the same time. How is that possible?

Firstly, you should never apply logic to mythological stories—they aren’t supposed to make logical sense! And a simple explanation is that since Vishnu is God he can choose to do whatever he wants—even exist as two avatars at once!

Jokes apart, perhaps when the stories were written, there was no concept of avatars. The concept was later added on to these stories; some said Rama, others said Parashurama, and still others said both were avatars of Vishnu. These stories are not fixed; they evolved from many different texts, periods and regions, and eventually came to be tied up together. Parashurama is born to kill Kiratavirya-arjuna, an adharmi, corrupt, king. He kills many such kings violently with his axe; apparently, he kills all Kshatriyas. Finally, the other gods plead with him to stop, saying the world needs warriors and kings too. He says he’ll stop the day he meets a good Kshatriya. When he meets Rama, he’s convinced of Rama’s virtue, and stops. It’s as though his role ends and Rama’s begins.
