Chapter twenty-three

MALAKI

In gargoyle lore, there was the one we softened for. But breeding outside the clutch was unheard of. So the lure of this tiny, soft-skinned female came as a surprise.

I listened to the man from the Zodiac Society. What he said explained things. I could not deny the draw toward the Zodiac, even though it would take our mating for the bond to fully form.

When she had touched me that night when the dragon and my demon brother had claimed the human as ours… It had taken all my resolve to resist her.

We had a saying, “Stone never flames until lava forms.” We gargoyles were a cold species. But when we found our soul mate, we burned hot like a volcanic eruption.

Lucien had sent me to fetch her so her training could start. She didn’t answer when I knocked on her door. After Carmichael Jones had left, we had all been on edge, even though we did not talk about the impending danger.

Ever since I brought her back to the club, I was leaving nothing to chance. My job was to cherish and protect her. When she did not reply after I knocked a second time, I entered her sleeping chamber.

The girl was hidden under the cover with only a tangle of dark hair showing. I knew enough about humans to understand it was important to wake her carefully, lest she throw an object at me. It would not hurt, but it made for an awkward conversation after.

“Zodiac.”

There was no response. Should I go and shake her? A hint of her bare shoulder taunted me, making her look as vulnerable as prey. How had the Constellation placed a burden that large on a human that small?

“Zodiac.”

Lucien would laugh if he saw me now. Technically, I did not have to breathe since I was a silica-based life form, but I liked the drama of it. So I took a deep breath, and bellowed, “Zodiac!”

The girl’s eyes blew open, and she shrieked, rolling to her back. She pulled the cover over her face until only her shocked eyes showed. We stared at each other until she slowly pushed herself into a seated position, her duvet still wrapped tightly around her.

“Good morning,” she said, her voice shaking.

It seemed I had scared her. That had never been my intent, so I pulled my mouth into a smile. Sometimes, I envied other species for the ease with which they manipulated their facial features. Gargoyles found this much harder, but she returned my smile, so I had to have done it right.

“I have come to collect you for a training session. Will you please get dressed and follow me?”

The girl stuck her head under the cover and made a sniffing noise, followed by a, “Ew, gross.”

Then she said louder, “Would you please leave the room so I can take a shower?”

Lucien had instructed me to never let her out of my sight, so I hesitated.

“Please?” she asked, her eyes pleading.

I was a gargoyle. Nobody would get to her as long as I was guarding her room.
