Chapter 11

'What do you think about this?' Joleen asked, holding up a bolt of material. As Joleen was, in her own words, a girl with a special figure, she needed a special custom wardrobe, and Allegra was going to make her a few summer dresses. They bartered their services, Joleen helped Allegra with renovations, and she was her seamstress.

'That would make you look like an eggplant,' Allegra said, looking at the dark purple hue.

Usually, a material shop was her favorite place to be. She was so inspired when surrounded by bolts of fabric and imagining her new creations, and Joleen was a dream model. Making a flirty summer dress that would compliment her had inspired her sketches, and she had pages of design ideas, yet somehow she wasn’t feeling her usual joie de vivre. Instead, she felt flat and testy.

'Gees, don’t hold back,' Joleen said, returning the fabric to the stack she’d found it in. 'Don’t get me wrong, but you seem to be a bit crabby. Anything wrong?'

'No, nothing,' Allegra said, sliding her hands over the white satin fabric. It felt so smooth under her hand, it felt like she was caressing skin. Her palms tingled, and her skin broke out in goose pimples at the tactile sensation of fabric as she imagined two nude bodies writhing in a bed of satin sheets.

'Because it seems to me like you’re out of alignment. Maybe you need the Jackhammer of Delight?' Joleen lifted an eyebrow.

Allegra gave her a dirty look. Joleen was using their euphemism for a vibrator, and Allegra was annoyed, mostly because she was right. It had been two weeks since Emmett had embarked on his slow courtship. They had a date twice a week and had dinner, long conversations, some heavy petting, and then when things were getting heated, Emmett would get up and leave.

While she was the one who had wanted to take it slow and get to know each other, she was suffering serious withdrawal. It was only now that she was abstinent for a protracted period that she realized that sex was a biological imperative, at least for her. She didn’t get any respite, and even her dreams were over-sexed and featured technicolor fantasies of her having sex with Emmett, sex with faceless men, orgies with heaving bodies and thrusting pelvises. She’d dreamed every possible sexual combination in her dreams, and every morning woke aching and unfulfilled.

'You want to talk about it?' Joleen asked.

'No.' Allegra walked around and picked up another bolt of fabric embroidered lace that she stroked again.

'Stop molesting the fabric,' Joleen said, taking it from her.

Allegra looked around to see if anyone had noticed her strange behavior. Thankfully, everyone was occupied with their own shopping and hadn’t noticed anything amiss. She walked over to the sewing patterns table.

'I’ve been taking it slow with Emmett,' Allegra said, lowering her voice so that others wouldn’t notice as she picked up a sewing pattern. 'And I’m struggling with the whole ‘no sex’ bit.' As she spoke, she crumpled the packet in her hands.
