"Yes. I'm sure they'll help me," you think.

You put your shoes back on and start toward the voices.

Suddenly you realize that Arnla is holding back. As you look back at her, she says, "I'm not coming, Kyiki."

"Not coming! Why?"

"You'll get help from the humans and go home. I have to return to my clutch. They will be angry that I left the herd to go with you. Good-bye, Kyiki. I'll miss you." And Arnla turns and hurries back through the passages, but not before you notice the tears in her eyes.

Sadly you watch until she disappears. Then you hear the voices again. You feel sure they must be surveyors, working for your father. What luck!

You walk boldly around the corner and see two humans and two of the monkeylike Kurabanda.

"Hello," you say simply.

"What? Who are you?" demands one of the humans.

"My name is Kyiki. My spaceship crashed on Volturnus and I need to get home to my father."

"So who's your father, kid?" asks the fist human.

"The head of Universal Minerals, the company you're working for."

"How do you know that, kid?" asks one of the monkeylike creatures suspiciously.

"Their symbol is on your hat."

"I hate to tell you this, kid, but you're fresh out of luck. We aren't working for Universal — anymore. We're selling the information to the Sathar, who intend to use it to help them control this planet."

Your relief changes to fear.

The other human speaks for the first time. "Let's just hold on to this kid awhile and see who wants to pay the most, the father or the Sathar."

You turn to run but find the Kurabanda have moved behind you and are pointing pistols at you.

It’s clear that these people aren't going to help you. You’re in big trouble!
