It paid to have inhouse mad science.

True, it could be expensive. Your average lunatic bending the laws of physics, nature, and, you know, regular laws needed some highly specialized equipment, and sucked up more power than a gamer trying to play the new CD Projekt Red game. But when you really went into the villain business, you didn’t want to be outsourcing your evil tech. Sure it was cheaper, but it was very much a case of ‘you get what you pay for.’

Another big reason you wanted your mad scientist nearby was because you should never leave those loons on their own for too long. Your average evil inventor didn’t really understand the whole ‘boundaries’ thing, and left to their own devices, can go pretty nutty. Not to mention if you didn’t keep an eye on them, they’d try and sneak in extra things into your evil machinery. An override switch so they can turn your army of warbots to their side. A big ‘self-destruct’ button. That kinda crap.

Those were the obvious reasons to keep your pet mad scientist close. In my case, another big benefit was how sexy Dolly was.

Not to be crass or anything. She knew it and flaunted that fact. It was no coincidence she wore those tight sweaters and an open lab coat. She knew how much of a turn on that classic evil garb was for me. And fuck, man. Seeing her dressed up like some escapee form a Hammer Horror Frankenstein production, backlit by sparking tesla coils and bubbling beakers. Oooh, it did all kinds a things to me.

She was dressed that way when she gave me a call several days after my meeting with Valkyria. It was pretty warm down there in the basement with all the servers humming and various towering machine flashing lights. The walls lit with veins of glowing purples and blues like some cyberpunk club and vats of bubbling green things throwing their light across the floor.

“What have you got for me?” I asked Dolly as I approached her chair.

“Hold up,” Dolly said, tongue poking from the corner of her mouth, her body twisting as she mashed the buttons on her controller. I glanced at the main screen, which was showing whatever shooter game Dolly was playing. A halo of smaller screens were arrayed around it, showing technical diagrams, data streams, and other things, but all her focus was currently on the game. “Hold up, Victor. Just… about… Gotcha!” she cried, punching the air triumphantly. “Wooo! Top rank! Take that you miserable scrubs!”

“Are you using hacks?” I said.

“Victor, please! I am a lady of highest integrity,” Dolly said, hand to her chest as she lifted her nose smugly. “I just happen to be that good.”

I let my eyes linger a bit on the swell of her breasts, then pulled my eyes to hers, seeing Dolly had clearly noticed. But come on. Who could blame me? By the look in her eye, she certainly wasn’t.

“I hope your gaming didn’t get in the way of work,” I said.
