Viktor stepped back into the shadows of the garden wall and watched as Juan Clague left Lilee’s cottage and she closed and locked the door behind him. Seconds later, a piece of cardboard was taped over the broken window in the door before all the lights were switched off downstairs and Lilee went upstairs to what he presumed was her bedroom on the second floor.

Viktor had arrived about ten minutes ago, but instead of rushing in to rescue Lilee once he’d shifted, as he had intended doing, he had instead listened incredulously to her talking and having coffee with the young man who had obviously broken into her home in the middle of the night.

Not only was she not calling the police, but she had offered the boy a job at her café.

A boy she had called “buddy.”

Despite Viktor’s previous objection to Lilee calling him that name, he found he didn’t like her calling someone else by it in that exasperatedly affectionate manner.

Or offering Juan his job at the cafe.

A temporary job he had forced himself into and that had been in jeopardy anyway after the way they parted at the restaurant earlier. But it had been the only way for him to legitimately see Lilee again, even if she ultimately refused his offer of help and asked him to leave.

Now Viktor had no idea how he was going to arrange to see her again.

Go to the café and order a coffee, like a normal person, Maksim advised through their mental link.

Fuck off! Viktor returned strongly.
