Chapter 17

Sandy

“The suspect, whom we now know as Sandy Mones, has managed to find and kill multiple members of the mafia. Reportedly, these men were vacationing on Kauai. After those very same men murdered her husband…”

I tuned out the television in the background and packed up the few articles of clothing I had with me, stuffing them into my pack. My back ached, and my head swam with exhaustion after hauling those heavy men across the property at the dump. I had figured there was no more appropriate place than the landfill for the trash of this earth to be dumped. A part of me wished I hadn’t gone the extra yard to send the message, if only it meant my back didn’t have to ache so damn bad. My age was wearing on me.

Unlike the days of my youth, these days, I needed time to recover after some heavy lifting. I didn’t have days to spare, though, not with the way the media was spinning this. It didn’t surprise me that the Kauai and Hawaii media were taking a bit of a vigilante perspective on my murders. The officials always took that route when they were afraid, and they didn’t want their people to know it. They knew better, and I knew better. I wasn’t killing these men to protect the island, as noble of a cause as that would be. No, I was killing for revenge. I was killing because a part of me had died with my husband.

I looked over at the clock hanging above the wall beside the TV. It read eleven-thirty in the morning.

Good, I thought to myself. That was going to give me just enough time to put my next plan into action.

I looked down at the table in front of me at the unfolded brochure that expanded into a map of the entire Koke`e state park. The park was up in the mountains on the west side of the island, and it was quite extensive. The brochure didn’t cover even half of the land that was up there, but I had filled in the rest by acquiring every map of the Koke`e area available in the Kauai Planning Department archives.

There was a specific reason I was so interested in the Koke`e area. There were over four thousand acres of untouched land in that area, at least as far as the government was concerned. There was one place, though, one building that the government didn’t know about.

Today, I was going to make it known.
