CHAPTER EIGHT
Tulia liked to think that, even though she was in her thirties, she was still young and hip. She thought she had a good grasp of technology, and she never had any trouble figuring out how to work her phone or any of the high-tech features in her RV.
But watching Olivia work was a humbling experience. They left the colonial village that afternoon after getting a lot of footage of themselves walking around and sitting in on Agathaâs cooking class, where she showed them how to make something called pease porridge with ham. Before leaving the parking lot, Olivia climbed into the back of the red cargo van and pulled out her laptop, sitting down on the little cot that was shoved between her crates and boxes of supplies.
âWhat are you doing?â Tulia asked, turning to look at her from her spot in the passenger seat up front.
âI want to get the footage to the police, but I donât want them to take my whole camera or everything we recorded today,â Olivia explained. âIâm going to make a copy of just the footage of Nolan and Floyd talking. That way, I can give them the disk and they wonât have to hold my camera for who knows how long. Thereâs no way I can afford to replace this if I lose it. It belongs to the studio.â

They spoke to a deputy from the sheriffâs department, who was confused but grateful for the footage. They gave him their contact information, then headed back to the farm, where they decided to split up for the afternoon. Tulia wanted to take Cicero out on another walk, and Olivia wanted to do some more work on the footage.
It was evening by the time Agatha and Nolan returned. Nolan made a beeline for his cabin as soon as he arrived, ignoring Tuliaâs wave of greeting. She was outside with Cicero, letting him observe the horses from a safe distance. Agatha gave her a bright smile and bustled over in her seventeenth-century dress.
âThere you are. I noticed you and your friend left sometime during the afternoon. I hope you didnât find the village boring.â
âNot at all,â Tulia said. âIt was lovely and very immersive. We both had some other things we wanted to do, though. We might go back tomorrow.â
âYou should. Thereâs a church service on Sunday thatâs a reenactment of one of the services we have records of from the time period. It is very interesting, even if you arenât religious. We also have a big meal for lunch, and I think weâre doing an apple-bobbing competition for the kids too. We try to do different things every weekend.â
Tulia loved her life. She had
