* Snickolas Nervola isn’t his real name, but if you went to Middletown High School South around when I did, you know who I’m talking about.
After that, I bought a bikini from Forever 21. But then, my #bravery temporarily halted. I guess it was halted by my sobriety? I had that bikini for a full year before I wore it. At that point, I had several different one-pieces, and I still had my trusty swim dress. I tried on that bikini several times and it definitely fit. It just didn’t fit the way I was taught that a bikini should fit. I kept telling myself that I would wear it out when my stomach was a little smaller or when my thighs got a little slimmer. Then I took an impromptu trip to Palm Springs with my friend Marcy.* We booked a hotel with a fabulous pool, and I only packed bikinis. I thought to myself, “No one knows me in Palm Springs, I’ll never see them again, who cares?!”
I had just bought a new car, but I made Marcy drive her old champagne-colored Chevy Cavalier. I don’t remember my reasoning, and it’s not important, but it’s a nice detail. I got in her car and announced, “I only packed bikinis. I can’t wait to take some nasty pictures and post them on Instagram. I’m going to hashtag them #veryfat #verybrave.” Then we laughed and laughed for the entire two-hour drive and talked about how #brave we were going to be for the next two days. And that’s how the second wave of my #bravery was born.
Current #Bravery
So how #brave is Nicole now? I’m proud to say I am the #bravest I’ve ever been in my whole life. I have a pool at my place that I swim in pretty regularly. I wear all the tank tops showing my fat arms that I want. I wear a lot of belly shirts showing off that belly. And this year I decided to wear shorts more, because it’s too dang hot to wear pants in the L.A. summer. I also found an activity that’s changed my life.
I’ve always been impressed by strippers and pole dancers. Whenever I saw them dancing on Instagram or in person in clubs, I would be the loudest person cheering. I LOVE POLE TRICKS! When my friend Gilli asked a group of us to take a private pole-dancing workshop, I leapt at the opportunity. I took the class and had the best time—I was sore the day after but had so much fun. I didn’t think about taking it up seriously until my very cool former assistant (now very cool friend), Eleanor, started to post on Instagram about her own pole dancing. I asked her where she was taking classes and, lo and behold, it was the same studio where I had taken that workshop.
