CHAPTER 23

ODDITIES

The profligate use of magic stopped as the pair turned their attention to them. Evelyn and Scott kept walking toward them. He had their brains in his mind, the crosshairs on their head, and finger on the trigger. They didn’t know it, but they would die if they so much as twitched a finger. But giving them a chance to surrender always looked better on the paperwork.

I’m beginning to understand why Evelyn loathes it.

The two fugitives linked hands and gave each other a look that, even from fifty yards away, radiated love and absolute grief. Their hands remained locked together as they faced Evelyn and Scott.

"Do it. We know the consequences," the man said, his voice quavering as he lifted his chin in defiance.

"We can take you in, have your sentence assessed. At this point, you haven’t killed anyone," Evelyn called out, her voice low and almost cajoling.

Scott hoped they took the offer.

"Kneel and we’ll take you in," she said in the same voice, almost a singsong.

"We can’t," the woman said, her voice breaking. "I’m sorry we were ever stupid enough to get involved with the MRR. Biggest mistake of our lives. And our daughter." She choked on a sob as she said the last word.

Her husband leaned over and kissed her cheek, a gesture so sweet Scott almost lowered his rifle. Then a twister was flying at them full speed.

Scott didn’t hesitate. The man dropped at the same time as the woman collapsed. Scott and Evelyn stood there for a long heartbeat as the magically induced wind faded and the fizz of magic that had surrounded them dispersed.

They walked over to the two bodies in silence. The police and EMTs were moving in their direction even more slowly.

"Did that feel as off to you as it did to me?" Scott’s voice was quiet and low.

"Yes," Evelyn bit out. "I do not like it. That is NOT what rogue mages do. They don’t apologize or love their spouse. They are angry, not regretful." She spat to one side; her face twisted with frustration. "This strikes me as wrong on every level."

Evelyn didn’t say anything else as they waited for the coroner to show up and collect the bodies. The drive back to the office was sedate by her standards and Scott didn’t worry about the world spinning when he climbed out of the car.

"Come on, we’re going to talk to Billy," Evelyn ordered. She was already marching down the hall, not even taking the time to change. Scott hung up the two rifles first. He realized they were more for showing the people watching they were serious, more than using them to take anyone down. Though sometimes not having to focus on your magic in an intense situation was a relief.

"Billy, what the fuck was that mess?" Evelyn demanded from the door of the computer room.

Their geek turned and looked at her with brows furrowed. "What was what? Did the job go wrong?"

Scott moved in and sat down in one of the two spare chairs.
