CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Top floor of the Hotel St. Paul, Montreal, Quebec, Thursday afternoon

Looking through the priorities Beatrice had given Forseti was supposed to grant Terra and her team the inside edge. They peeked behind the scenes to learn what Beatrice Villon cared the most about. It turned out there was quite a lot.

She sought artifacts from all across North America, some in museums or private collections. Others had not been found and only existed in legend. She was interested in real estate and wanted to know the moment any from a list of certain properties opened up. The instructions were rather vague about what “opened up” meant, but Terra did not think she wanted to own land that might hold Viking artifacts.

There was also a list of names, with a value, sometimes two, by each one.

Terra was one of the few worth more alive than dead.

Leif and Mads were worth more to Forseti delivered in a body bag. Of their team, only Harris Barrow escaped the hit list. Terra could not help but wonder if Villon didn’t want him dead or if she was showing tact by not putting a name as famous as his in a document like this. The others were nobodies, but Dr. Harris Barrow was known in archeological circles, even if he lacked the gravitas the Villon Institute packed.

However, their organization was expanding.

Harris had offered Romero and Akia consultant positions, and they had both accepted. Good thing, too. Terra was adept at looking through spreadsheets and finances, but the new pair were better at reading between the lines than she was.

“Here’s records of a chartered private jet. It landed slightly before the meetup. If there was any doubt Beatrice was in Canada with us, we can put it to rest,” Romero stated.

Terra looked out the window from their suite at the top of the hotel. Tall buildings were the norm in this part of the city. The shortest she saw was six stories, and many were double or triple that. All were filled with people. She could feel the city, all the places Beatrice and her thugs could hide. They might be in another hotel like this one or some apartment Forseti had controlled for years.

It almost made her miss the stakeout by the hydroponic farm in the countryside. Out there, they had been able to see in all directions. Even at night, Terra felt she would see any attackers coming. Maybe that wasn’t exactly true since people could move through a cornfield without being seen. Still, it felt like something she could wrap her head around. Here in downtown Montreal, all she could think about were the hundreds of thousands of people Beatrice could hide among.

“Wait, I think I got something,” Romero told them. “She wanted a place to stay. Highly exacting specifications. Square footage. An entrance hall. An ample amount of space for private quarters and a secure place to store valuables.”

“That sounds like her,” Barrow chimed in. “She always understood the part of the game that came after the artifact discovery better than I did.
