Chapter 13

Angela was in a rush to get inside and dress for work. She still had the phone calls to make as she had promised Chief Helbar. She was upset about running late, but her animals were her responsibility. When one of them wasn’t feeling up to par, it was her job to make things better.

In this instance, one goat had gotten loose and eaten something he shouldn’t have. Even Ruff had taken notice that the poor goat wasn’t well. He’d barked and herded it away from the others so that Angela could check it out.

She’d given him a homemade mixture of cooking oil, tea, ground ginger, and baking soda, just to be certain he wouldn’t get bloated in a way that could cause death. Then, she and Ruff had stayed by his side until she was sure there was no sign of illness.

Now the clock was ticking too fast, and she needed to get a move on before the entire day passed her by without her being able to make any progress on the murder case.

Once Angela had showered and changed so that she no longer smelled of goat, she called Chief Helbar to ask if he’d learned anything about herbalists using bear parts.

“Hello Chief. I’m sorry I didn’t reach out to you earlier, but I had a small problem with a goat.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’ve had a rather busy morning myself. I hope there was nothing serious about the issue with your goat. Is it doing well now?” he kindly inquired.

“The stubborn little thing will be just fine. He somehow managed to get out of the pen and eat something that didn’t agree with him. He had me frightened for a while. However, everything turned out perfectly fine. I dosed him with a concoction the vet had mentioned one time, and now he’s munching on his own food,” Angela replied with a derisive laugh.

“Goats do have a bad habit of eating strange things, but I’m pleased to hear it wasn’t toxic this time around. Did you have some information for me?” the Chief asked.

“Not yet. I’ll be starting the calls as soon as we hang up. I was calling to check on your side of the investigation. Have you found any herbal shops that specialize in bear parts?”

“I’m working on a few leads. I haven’t gotten far yet. I will get in touch with you as soon as there’s anything to report. And I expect the same from you, Atkinson.”

“Not a problem,” Angelia stated. “I’ll be sure to keep you up to date. Bye for now.”

Angela looked at the list of relatives she’d come up with for her suspects and chose the first one. It happened to be Frank Bowen’s mother whom, she surmised, was going to be elderly.

What she hadn’t expected was for the woman to be practically deaf.

“Hello! Who’s this?” the woman yelled into the phone, almost bursting Angela’s ear drums.

“This is Angela Atkinson, ma’am.”

“What did you say? I’m not buying into any phone schemes, young lady.
