LETTUCE

Growing lettuce is easy and fun! You can save money by growing organic greens, which will last for months.

Varieties of lettuce

Iceberg, Batavia, Romaine, Speckled romaine, Green leaf, Red leaf, Butterhead, Sanguine Ameliore, Catelaine, Garnet Rose, Murielle, Laibacher Eis, Anuenue, Great Lakes 118 and Totana

When to plant

Sow lettuce in containers or raised beds for a cool-weather salad from late March onwards to early April. Make sure not to sow all your seeds at once, or you'll end up with an overabundance. Instead, plant some each week, so they don't mature together. You can also have a fall crop of lettuce. Plant after the hot heat of the summer has finished.

How to plant

Draw a shallow groove in the soil with your seed marker and then sprinkle some seeds into it. Lettuce will germinate quite well, so don't waste precious resources by sowing too heavily. Place some fine soil or compost over the seeds and gently press down. Then water with a watering can to help to promote the growth of your plants.

You can grow lettuce using just about any of the techniques discussed in this book, you can direct seed into containers indoors or outdoors. You can also grow starter plants and even regrow lettuce heads that you have already used. Place the chopped-off lettuce stalk in a jar of water with LECA or some kind of support and watch and wait.

Harvest

Harvesting lettuce is easy. Grip around the plant stem as near the soil level as possible, and pull up. Harvesting your lettuce leaves while they are still tender will give you a higher yield: they're the sweetest of all. Firm down the soil from where those plants came, then sow just one or two seeds in their place; this means that there can be three crops within the season instead of two. Another way of harvesting lettuce is to just remove the outer leaves. This way the plant continues to grow and produce new leaves for many months to come.
