. Well.”

“I was the only casualty,” Andy said smugly. “A little more to the left, Mary Jo. Wounds incurred in the course of a gallant rescue-” “What’d you do, bump your head when you dived for cover?”

Mary Jo rounded on him like a miniature Fury. “He pushed me out of the way of a bullet, you smart-ass redneck! And fell on top of me to shield me. I think he’s got a concussion, but he won’t go to the hospital-” “I haven’t got a concussion,” Andy broke in. “Just a bump on the bean and a sore lip. I bit it when I fell. It’s so damned embarrassing. I was hoping for a nice romantic (and relatively painless) wound, in the arm, say, so I could go around wearing a sling and be waited on hand and foot by adoring females.”

“Tough luck, buddy.” Walt sat down. “Sorry,” he added awkwardly.

44 c s okay.” Andy waved a gracious hand. “You were worried.”

“I’m still worried. They didn’t catch him, did they?”

“Not yet. But this time they’ll throw the book at him. Breaking and entering, assault with a deadly weapon, assault with intent to kill-” “He did kill one of the dogs,” Diana said soberly. “Emily is going to be so upset.”

“No point in telling her till she gets back,” Walt said. “In fact “Right.”

Andy sat up, holding the icebag in place. “No point in telling them anything until they get back. With luck the cops will have nailed Larry by then.” Mary Jo shook her head. “He may not be very bright, but he s hunted and trapped all over the area. He knows every cave, every hiding place. They won’t find him in a hurry.”

She got up from the floor, where she had been kneeling next to Andy, and went to the computer.

“What are you doing?” Diana asked.

Mary Jo’s hands moved across the keyboard. “I had almost finished the second paper. I’m going to write the last paragraph, print both of them out, and then leave. It won’t take very long.”

The other three exchanged glances. Diana expected Wait to expostulate, but for once he had sense enough to think before he spoke. His raised eyebrows asked a silent question of her. She nodded and shrugged.

Might as well let him open the ball. It would take all three of them, and a lot of time, to convince Mary Jo. And maybe a locked bedroom door.

“Where are you going?” Walt asked.

“I’ll check into a motel somewhere.”

“What are you planning to use for money?”

Mary Jo didn’t turn. “Get off my back, Walt.”

“You can move in with me if you want.”

Mary Jo told him what she thought of that idea. “Then I’ll move in here,” Walt said coolly. “That’s probably a better solution. This is where Larry will come if he decides to try again. His skull is pretty thick; once he gets an idea into it, it stays.”

There was a muffled sound from Mary Jo. Her head was bent over the keyboard, and her hands were still.
