The nice part about having a police officer for a friend was that he knew exactly how to get the purple dye out. There was a special solvent at the police station, which was where we all went.
Wesley and Chloeâs grandpa, whom everyone affectionately called Grandpa Lockwood, was a retired police officer who enjoyed manning the front desk. This would be the first time Iâd ever seen Grandpa Lockwood without cupcakes in tow for him. His favorites were the Boston Creme filled ones that I decorated with little handcuffs, police batons, and police hats.
âWhoâs been playing with bank criminals?â asked Grandpa Lockwood.
Chloe and I ran up to hug him but he gave us the Heisman. âWhy donât we save the hellos for after you both look a little less like Barney the Dinosaur?â
He directed us to the police locker room in the back. âThere are two huge bottles of solvent in each of the showers. It wonât get everything out but it should remove most of it so youâll just be a lighter shade of purple by the time youâre done. Rub it in, let it sit for ten minutes and then scrub it off with those special sponges. There are some old police tee shirts and sweats sitting on the bench for you to change into when you're done.â
âDoes it work on cats, too?â I asked, holding Lucky up. Lucky was not at all happy about his current state of purple and still trying to lick it off. Fearing its toxicity, I tried to deter him from any more self-cleaning.
He shrugged. âIâve never actually tried it on cats. But it does work on cat burglars,â he laughed, cracking himself up at his own joke.
âThanks, Grandpa Lockwood,â we both chimed before heading into the locker room.
The solvent required a few ten-minute trials but an hour later, I was finally brave enough to look in the mirror. Lucky was simply a faded shade of light purple and so was I. In the right light, it almost looked like a tan. Or maybe a spray tan gone wrong with a blotchy effect.
âIf you dye your hair purple, we could be twins,â said Chloe, looking at our reflections in the mirror. Unlike her, I could never pull off purple hair. Plus, having an unruly mass of waves and curls, it was best not to draw any undue attention to it.
âCould these outfits land us a position on the force?â I asked Chloe, looking down at the shirts that said Property of Clover Creek Police that Grandpa Lockwood probably pulled from the reject pile of sample shirts the police department ordered.
âDoubtful. A costume party, possibly,â she said. âReady to go take a look at your impenetrable vault?â
âSure,â I said. Luckyâs kitty bjorn was ruined. I simply dropped it into the waste can. Lucky jumped on the edge of the bin and tightrope-walked the rim, looking down at it and then at me. âDonât worry, little guy. Weâll get you another one on the way home.
