“There, we have a map of the area.” Indya was hammering away on the computer. They were back at the Den and gathering themselves from the terrorizing ordeal.

“How did you even manage to plant the location markers in the heat of the chase?” Zoe asked.

“I didn’t. I planted them while we snuck in. We—is that a beer?”

Zoe’s guilt was the sound of a bottle being opened and the metal lid clinking on the floor as it popped off. “For the nerves. For you, of course, but you can bet your ass I’m having one too. For the entire tech I geared you with, I’ve never felt so blind in my entire fucking life! What’s up with that area? Here, drink a cold one while you talk.”

Indya shook her head as she accepted the gift before answering. “The only clue I can give you is an artifact on a radio tower in the middle of that community square.”

“The interference device?”

“It wasn’t tech, Ash. If it was, it was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It looked like a stone of some sort. But the place was surrounded. I couldn’t get a good look. But, it may have caused the interference.”

“And mind control,” Ariel added from the side. She was still in a daze. The adrenaline felt like it had gotten the better of her.

The other two women looked at her, with looks of surprise mingled with concern.

“El, you’ve been quiet for a long time,” Indya started. “I want to take a guess and say it's the shock, but you're too well composed for that.”

“It isn’t the shock. I’m over that. The drive was long enough to calm me down.”

“Beer?” Zoe asked, holding out another opened bottle.

Ariel surprised even herself as she took the bottle by impulse, gulping down at least a quarter of it before setting it on a counter that she leaned on.

Indya simply stared at her sister with a hint of amusement. Zoe, in turn, offered a quirky smile and raised her own bottle, “Cheers.”

“So,” Indya started, “what’s up then?”

“I was onto something right before all hell broke loose, and I completely misplaced the thought.” Ariel was frustrated. She massaged her temples to concentrate. “There was something familiar. Something I had seen before.”

“If there were something familiar in that zombie apocalypse shitshow you two-faced, then I’ve been the sidekick to the wrong twin here,” Zoe said jokingly.

Even Indya smiled, but she was looking hard at her sister, sensing her jumbled thoughts. “Did it have to do with the experiments?”

“So we’re sure they’re test subjects?” Zoe asked.

“The way they moved, yes,” Ariel answered. “And yeah. Something about them got me thinking before things got heated. Maybe if we could’ve read their minds, I could... Wait! That’s it. We couldn’t use our telepathy. That’s exactly it. It reminded me of—”

“Jaydon,” Indya finished, realization dawning on her features.

“Okay. Listen, you two need to stop finishing each other’s sentences,” Zoe commented. “I’m feeling super average here, and I’m usually the one to connect the dots.
