Chapter Fifteen
âHowâd it go?â Jackie looked up from her magazine.
âGot a lecture on not smoking or drinking, peed in a cup, they took a blood sample, and I have an appointment in January.â I held up the plastic sack full of nutrition pamphlets, coupons, and prenatal vitamin samples. âAnd no more Snickers and Dr. Pepper for breakfast. The nurse says Iâm anemic and I have to eat, like, you know, green stuff.â
âSucks to be you,â Jackie said, without sympathy, as she walked with me to the car.
âIf Iâm gonna have this baby, Iâm gonna do it right,â I told her. âAnd thanks for waiting.â
âHey, no problem. Iâm working evenings anyway. Iâd just be sleeping if I hadnât come with you for moral support.â
My phone rang. I didnât recognize the number. âMelbourne here.â
âWho? Um, Iâm trying to call Kit?â
âThis is she. Who is this?â We walked through the parking lot and I unlocked the door for Jackie.
âRaj, remember, from the party?â
Jackie made pantomiming gestures, wanting to know who it was.
âHi Raj, I didnât recognize your number. I thought it was someone from work.â
Jackie gave me the thumbs up and winked, getting into the car and closing the door quietly.
âDo you have lunch plans? I got the afternoon off.â
âNo, I donât have plans. Where would you like to go?â
âThereâs a little Moroccan café in the University district, just off Maple. Itâs next to the coin-op laundry. Do you know it?â
âIâve seen it, but never been there. You wanna meet there in, say, thirty minutes?â I put the bag of pamphlets in the back seat and shut the door.
âGreat.â We hung up.
âSee? And you thought he wouldnât call you. I told you not to waste your time pining away for that karate friend of yours. Raj is a hottie.â
âHe is pretty cute,â I admitted, starting the car and driving back into town.
âSo, what does he do?â
âI guess thatâs something Iâll have to ask him at lunch.â
âLunch date. Hmm, not quite as promising as a dinner date, but doable. So, hereâs what you do. Make sure when he calls you again, that youâre not available untilââ
âI donât play games, Jackie.â I started to turn left unto University Ave. and had to wait while the crosswalk cleared of pedestrians and bicyclists. One of the disadvantages of living in the University district.
âBut thatâs how you get men, Kit, you have to play the games if you want to win.â
âI donât play games. If he asks me out, and if I feel like going, Iâll say yes.â
A car pulled out in front of a florist shop, and I resisted the urge to take the spot. Sometimes it was tempting to take any spot that opened up in the University district, whether you needed it or not, because parking was so difficult.
âDo you need a ride home? I was just going to park at Chrisâ house and walk to the restaurant.â I was just as lazy as any other car-owner, but at least if I were on foot I could take Kaa with me.
