The sun was low in the sky, finally letting the breeze pretend that it could cool them off when Caroline's stomach rumbled.

"We kind of skipped lunch, didn't we?" she asked. She elbowed Joe in the side to job him out of his contemplative stupor and laughed quietly as he shook himself. it was a movement so reminiscent of his wolf form that she had to wonder how nobody figured out his secret.

"Come on, let's give the guys a call and grab some dinner," she said, standing up and stretching.

"Sure," Joe said, following her lead. "There's a decent Mexican place a few blocks over if you guys want something besides diner food. Or a bar... can you go into a bar?"

"Well, not to drink, no, but–" Caroline's words died in her throat and she stopped dead. Just ahead of them a figure hurried away at the end of the street and ducked around the corner in a hurry.

"I think that was Meyers!" she said and took off running as quietly as she could manage. She was nowhere near as quiet as Greg always was, but she had learned a few things over the past year and did a reasonable job of not sounding like a cop in pursuit. She slowed down just before the corner and tried to look natural as she cleared the shop at the end of the row.

It was the driveway to the parking lot behind the row of shops, and two blank brick walls lined the man-made canyon. At the other end, Meyers hurried past the buildings and the dumpster that marked the edge of the parking area and disappeared.

"It's all wooded back there, past the pavement. If you go far enough you hit some hiking trails, then the RV campground," Joe said quietly into her ear.

"Well, let's see where he goes, then, shall we?" Caroline started forward, wishing that she had her taser with her. It was sitting in her purse in the conference room since they hadn't intended to wander very far or for very long. Still, just one shifter against trained law enforcement officers, one of whom was also a shifter? Caroline wasn't especially concerned.

They came up beside the dumpster and she glanced over at Joe, who's eyes had turned the honey brown of his wolf, his hair rippling a bit and growing more grey fur than brown hair. He sniffed the air carefully and made a face.

"Can't get a good scent thanks to this freaking dumpster," he growled softly.

"Well, let's keep moving and see if we can get clear of it for you," she whispered back.

They crept out from their improvised shelter and glanced around the parking lot searching for movement. Meyers was nowhere in sight, but that didn't necessarily mean anything. There were plenty of cars for him to duck behind and the woods started only about twenty feet away, close up against the end of the curb that marked the edge of the property. Anyone could have made it to a decent hiding place before Caroline and Joe edged around the corner.
