"Choose a weapon," Lazarus said with a magnanimous sweep of his hand at the massive training room in his manor house.
He ignored that I was glaring daggers at him, my fangs bared on a deep hiss.
"I'd advise against a broadsword, since you don't have the strength for it yet, but if you want to make a fool of yourself, go right ahead."
I watched him cross the polished wood floor in the direction of a small collection of wooden staffs, and my temper just snapped. I needed an outlet for all my fear, all my hatred of my hunger and my body, and for all my frustration that we'd never find Lorn, that I'd never get to go back to my old life. Lazarus just happened to represent every single aspect.
I was across the room in a heartbeat, my shoes not even squeaking on the floorboards as I cut through the air, my breath ragged and fast.
Lazarus's rumbling laugh wasn't a good sign, especially when it continued even when I launched at his back and wrapped my hands around his throat. I didn't want to kill him, I didn't even want to hurt himâit wasn't his fault I was a vampire, but it was certainly thanks to him that I hadn't killed anyone tonightâbut I had too much energy brimming inside me, and it transmuted into violence.
"No weapons, then," he remarked, unwrapping my hands from around his neck and dropping me to my feet on the floor. "As you wish, baby vamp."
"Stop calling me that," I bit out, adjusting my weight on my feet and watching him turn slowly, assessing my stance. I knew it must be all wrong; I was hardly used to throwing punches in my day job. "It's irritating."
"But you are a vampire, and you're a baby," he pointed out, an infuriating little smirk in the corner of his mouth. He rolled up the sleeves of his silky shirt, unfastening the top three buttons, and it was suddenly hard to focus. "Come on, then," he taunted. "If you really want to take your anger out on me, try to hit me."
I curled my hands into fists, but hesitated. Did I really want to get into a fight with a three-hundred-year-old vampire I didn't really know and definitely couldn't trust?
"Unless you don't think you can," he added, tilting his head. "I understand if you're intimidatedâ"
My temper spiked even higher than before, and I swung my fist at his jaw, throwing all my body weight into the move like I'd read in a book. I threw a little too much weight into it, and spun alarmingly fast, losing my footing.
Lazarus caught me with my back to his chest, his arms like a cage around my waist. "Sloppy, Karina, very sloppy."
I snarled, wrenching away from him and surprised when he let me go. I faced him again, lifting my hands in front of my face and curling them into fists.
"You'll be sloppy by the time I'm finished with you," I threw back at him, startled when he laughed.
