CHAPTER THIRTEEN

What on earth am I doing?

I stared at my reflection in the bathroom mirror, correction, Gabriel’s bathroom mirror. I smoothed my hands over the white shirt he had given me. Though it was washed it still smelled of him. This was crazy, I thought to myself. Weeks ago I had promised myself and my father I would have no contact with the Royal. Now here I was, in his bathroom, nude, except for one of his over-sized shirts and my panties, which I had refused to take off and allow him to wash.

I breathed deeply and willed my body to stay upright as my head swam. I grabbed the door handle and quietly opened the door. Peering down the hallway, I snuck a peek at Gabriel. Seeing he was busy fussing about in his kitchen, I snuck down the hall into the laundry room, closing the door silently behind me.

I searched for my clothes, pouting when I found them still in the wash. If I wanted to sneak out I was going to have to do it half naked.

“Dammit!” I cursed slamming the washer lid back down. I winced as a loud boom echoed throughout the tiny room. Biting my lip nervously I decided to bite the bullet, so I took a deep breath and opened the door.

“SHIT!” I gasped at the sight of Gabriel standing on the opposite side of the door. He smiled arrogantly. “What the hell are you doing?” I demanded. “Sneaking up on me like that, what’s your problem?”

“I wouldn’t have to sneak up on you if you weren’t sneaking around my house.” He retorted condescendingly.

“I’m not sneaking,” I offered, “I was looking for my clothes.”

Gabriel raised an eyebrow and ran his tongue along his top teeth, “Whatever,” he said dismissively, “Go into the den and wait for me there. I’ve got some stuff brewing in the kitchen you can put on those cuts and bruises to heal them up quicker, you’re not leaving here all black and blue like that. I’ve got enough trouble in this town already.don’t need your father on my ass as well.” He said before sauntering back down the hallway.

Gloomily I followed him until he directed me to the den; I went and made myself a seat on the only chair in the room, a leather recliner. Gabriel didn’t have much, but what he did have was classy and genuine. On each side of the stone fireplace there was a set of beautiful hand crafted mahogany book shelves, stocked full with a mixture of albums and ancient books. I stood back up and ran my fingertips along the bindings of the books. Vampire books. I recognized some of them to match the ones in my father’s own collection but there were a few that stood out to me. One in particular I’d never seen before. I peeked towards the other room where Gabriel was busy preparing something, my curiosity aroused, confident that he was otherwise engaged I plucked the large leather bound book of the shelf as quietly as I could.
