Chapter Eleven
Wings outstretched, I glided in a slow, concentric circle, using Talosâs eagle-like eyes to see deep into the mountain passes and gorges.
I prefer âdragon-like,â came his words.
My bad, I thought.
Not far from here, perhaps thirty miles away, I had broken up a blood sport of sorts. A gang of local werewolves, who preferred their food fresh and with a racing pulse, were unlike my disgusting boyfriend who had a taste for the rotten and the putrid. Unfortunately for the local werewolves, their âfoodâ had been the wife of a local sheriff deputy Iâd befriended. I say unfortunately, because every last one of them was dead now. Of course, Iâd had some help...
I caught an updraft of surprisingly warm air, and I allowed it to lift me. Talosâs wings undulated and absorbed and adjusted, and I loved every moment of every second that I was up here, in the heavens, seeing what I was seeing, feeling what I was feeling.
Would feel even better, I thought, if I found the boy.
I saw the various search parties far below, and I stayed above the helicopter. I even spied my own friends, moving in twos along the mountainside, flashlight beams strafing the ground. I saw hundreds, if not thousands, of smaller and not so small pairs of bright spots: raccoons and rodents, skunks and deer. All lit brightly for my eyes only.
When I take on Talosâs form, I take on his obvious physical attributes. Interestingly, I retain some of my own. One of which is my own unique night vision, which, when combined with Talosâs ultra-powerful eyes, formed quite a one-two punch.
Do you have your own night vision, Talos? I asked, as we continued our search, gliding high enough to avoid being spotted by the search parties, but not so high that I couldnât spot a small, smoldering fire in a shallow cave.
I do have night vision, Sam, but itâs not quite as pervasive as your own.
I help you see better into the night?
You do, Sam.
So that would mean I am kind of awesome?
Very, very awesome. And maybe a little needy.
I would have grinned, except Talosâs thick dragon lips didnât do much in the way of expressing. I would have laughed, too, except Talosâs laughter sounded more like a guttural roar that scared even me.
And you think the short, sharp, barks of laughter from you humans are easy on the ears? You squeaky things.
Now, I did laugh, despite myself, and the sound came out a little louder than I expected. And a little brighter too, as a spark of fire shot out of my mouth, sizzling and smoking, until it disappeared.
Oops, I thought. I sparked.
I sensed Talosâs own laughter deep inside my mind, as I angled toward a promising nearby canyon, a canyon that seemed to be within hiking distance, even for a seven-year-old boy.
