Chapter 14

Marcus Aurelius nosed his way between the truck’s seats and under Ellie’s elbow. He whined and nuzzled, and tried his best to crawl onto her lap.

“This again?” she said to my dog. “You’re too big, love. You’ll knock the gearshift.”

He whimpered and settled his snout alongside her thigh.

“I think he remembers you,” I said. Either he remembered, or my dog’s excellent sense of character was in overdrive.

“Chihiro had a cat but he didn’t seem to care one way or another.” She rubbed Marcus Aurelius’s ears. “I wish you could talk.”

“Maybe I should get a parrot. Wouldn’t be my first.” I turned onto the highway that led into town. “African Grays are quite intelligent.” And a bit moody.

Ellie grinned. “Other than Chihiro, you’re the first person I’ve met who wanted to find a way around the enchantments.”

“That can’t be so.” I could think of several people who wouldn’t give up just because of the puzzle of it all. And then there was Magnus Freyrsson, whom I’m sure wouldn’t give up until he found a way into her bed.

Ellie snorted. “I can see on your face exactly what you are thinking, and yes, I have learned how to gauge a man’s motivation.” She shook her head.

I opened my mouth, but closed it when she laughed.

“Every man motivated solely by sex stopped trying after the first day of forgetting,” she said.

Good, I thought. “All of them?” I asked.

“Every single one.” She poked my bicep. “Except you.”

Were we flirting? I was pretty sure we were flirting. “That’s because I’m not solely motivated by sex,” I said.

She laughed again and rubbed my dog’s ears.

“Wait.” A realization dawned. “Did we…?” Because that was something I did not want to forget.

Ellie laughed again. “No. Gotta get through that first round of forgetting, remember?”

She was definitely flirting. A beautiful woman was flirting with huge, lumbering me.

She wiggled in her seat. “You make a mean pasta, Mr. Victorsson. I will happily dine with you again.”

I didn’t know what to think other than to thank last night’s pasta-cooking Frank. Seemed I was my own wingman.

Ellie laughed again. “We learned I cannot touch the tracers on your forearms or the protection spells on your scalp.” She pointed at my head. “Yggdrasil seems okay.”

So the concealments interacted with elven tracer magic. “I’ll remember.”

She chuckled. “One of these days, you will. I have faith.”

One of these days, I’d look back on this and be very happy, indeed, but only if Alfheim survived its current vampire scourge.

I turned onto the county road leading into town. We’d drive by Lara’s Café, then either around town on the main service road, or through downtown, before getting to The Great Hall.

Ellie looked out at the trees. She might like downtown. It was definitely more picturesque than the ditches and warehouses.

But we should concentrate on our task. “Have you ever dealt with a low-demon?” I asked.

She watched an apple orchard go by. “Once, in Germany. The kami in Japan are… how should I describe it? Militant, maybe? About non-native demons.
