Chapter 14

Asher

I should have been calmer about where we were going. After all, I had spoken to Niel and his sister Lil when I was trying to track down that witch.

It was clear then that they hadn’t trusted Greyson as much as we didn’t. But Niel wasn’t the Alpha of Silver Springs, he was just standing in as leader while the Alpha and Betas were at Greyson’s. I had no way of knowing if there were more in that pack that thought the way he did, or if I had just happened to take all of the wolves that did when I had left that diner.

In fact, that alone made this trip treacherous. Niel may not trust Greyson, but the last time I had been here I had taken a half dozen members of the pack with me. And since then one of them, Elena, had been killed by a vampire.

The same vampire I traveled with.

This whole expedition to their pack lands was a dicey idea at best, but I didn’t see what choice we had, not after what we had just experienced. We at least had a chance to find people to stand with us against Greyson here.

We couldn’t take his estate alone. We had to find more wolves.

Hopefully wolves that wouldn’t try to kill us.

We ran from the Hound Tooth Pack, and kept running until we were far enough away we could sleep. Not that Nova or I got much. We were too excited to have any sort of wrestling match, but also too scared to get much sleep while sleeping under trees so dense they blocked out the sun.

We were in prime Vampire territory and had resorted to taking turns on watch, which resulted in both of us getting half as much sleep and being twice as cranky.

‘How much longer,’ Nova whined through the pack connection. I was well aware she was putting it on, pretending to be an insolent child on a car trip, but it still ground against my spine.

Maybe it was just me that was too cranky from lack of sleep.

‘We should be reaching them soon.’ At least I sure as hell hoped so. My paws ached, my stomach growled, and I was starting to feel more and more out of control of my wolf who was getting more and more punchy.

If this pack was the same as the last I was liable to lose it and rip someone’s throat out, which was not my way.

‘Okay, I say we speed up. I’m hungry and would like to find a bed and a steak,’ I half growled. Nova chuckled at something I didn’t understand and sped up, pulling us closer to the town that I had visited before.

I was just starting to be able to make out the twists of smoke from the chimneys on the outskirts of town. They must have been having some kind of a roast, I could smell the familiar tang of cooking meat from here.

I couldn’t help but let out a little whoop of excitement.
