Within another half-hour, the investigating party had returned to the dining hall, where after receiving a call, a shame-faced Blaise-Hamilton announced that Iris and Geneva would be assisting him in questioning suspects.

“One of the women,” he said, not bothering to specify, “has uncovered evidence that the toboggan may have been tampered with. If true, this is a more serious matter than we initially assumed; and we’re going to need the full cooperation of everyone present if we hope to find out who killed the old man.”

The news that even a member of the local police force was now treating Horace’s death as a murder investigation caused a ripple of unease among the assembled party.

“That means one of us must have done it,” said Opal, looking around at the others as if expecting someone to up and confess. “I can tell you right now it wasn’t me.”

“Of course, none of us is going to admit to it,” said Bossie, reaching for a handful of trail mix. “That’s why Geneva and Iris are conducting interviews. Personally, I’ve always wanted to be interviewed as part of a murder case.”

“Have you really?” said Richard, eyes narrowed.

“Oh, good grief,” said Lilith, “you have not once mentioned this desire to me.”

“There are certain things that a woman doesn’t talk about,” said Bossie defensively. She had been taking a long look at Blaise-Hamilton and seemed to be finding him very attractive. The threat of danger seemed to have awoken all her romantic instincts and suppressed her allergies. “I’d appreciate not being corrected by my own daughter.”

“Mom, I’m in my forties,” said Lilith. “Stop treating me like a little girl. Richard, put your phone away!”

“You don’t look a day over twenty-two,” said Richard, hastily returning his phone to his shirt pocket.

After a brief consultation with Iris, Geneva decided that Bossie ought to be interviewed first. They led her outside onto the icy patio, out of earshot of the other suspects. “Do we have to talk out here?” asked Bossie with a frigid smile. “I can barely move my mouth.”

“Unless you want to head back to the cabin,” said Geneva. “But frankly I don’t want to make the journey a dozen more times tonight.”

Bossie let out a disgruntled sniff, as if to say it was rude of the two women to make her suffer for their own convenience. “What would you like to know?” she asked.

“Did you know the murder victim?” asked Iris.

“Everyone on the trip knew him, didn’t they? We all met on Friday night.”

The two women continued to gaze at her levelly.

“I might have met him once or twice before that,” she added meekly.

“When?”

Bossie inhaled a deep breath of cold air before saying, “In Calgary, in the mid-1970s.”

This wasn’t the answer either of them had been expecting, and Iris had to catch onto the doorpost to steady herself. “You’ve known Horace for how long?” she asked.

“I mean, we hadn’t talked much in the past. I don’t know, forty-five years,” she said. “But we did have an encounter or two back when we were both young.
