Do an Ollie

Named for its originator, Alan “Ollie” Gelfand, this move is a rite of passage for anyone who wants to look like he knows what he’s doing on a skateboard. Although simple in theory—you jump, your “deck” rises with you, you and your deck land together without wiping out—this Skate 101 trick takes hours of practice to master.

1. Put on a helmet. (Seriously, don’t be a fool.)

2. Find a patch of grass. One day you’ll Ollie on concrete as you speed along, but until then you’re going to practice on grass—as much to keep your board from rolling as to cushion your falls.

3. Stand on your board with one foot at the tail (back) and the other near the middle. If you’re right-handed, that probably means right foot back. But if you’re not sure, set yourself up as if for a tug-of-war; that will show you which foot you prefer in front. It will also tell you how to stand on a skateboard in general: torso open to the side, head turned forward.

4. Position your back foot on the tail so you’re on the ball of your sneaker.

5. Bend your knees into a squat.

6. As you jump, push down the tail of the board with the toe of your back foot, which will pop the board into the air (a). What should happen naturally then is your front knee will bend forward as the foot lifts toward your crotch (b). Your primary focus needs to be on making sure that your front foot maintains contact with the deck as it rises, sliding on its side up the board, as your knee rises and flexes (c–d). This should happen naturally, especially if you’re relaxed. So relax!
