When Matt woke early the next morning, Lisa was already up and doing sit-ups. Daz had not stayed the night. They showered â separately â dressed, ate, and then drove to Dazâs tacky B&B. They were getting used to such places. He was waiting outside, smoking at a plastic table in the tiny garden. He waved, didnât speak, tossed his butt into a plant pot loaded with them, and then led them upstairs.
His room had only a single bed and an armchair, which Lisa took. Daz went to a single unit that served as a kitchen and put the kettle on. âI just left a luxury apartment for this, you know.â
âMuch appreciated,â Lisa said. âHeâs told me all about you, by the way.â
Daz raised his head to look at her. âSniper bullet or chunks of carrot?â
She got his meaning. She remembered the story of Matt saving a commander who nearly choked to death on his own vomit. âSorry, carrots.â
âYeah, cheers, Matt.â
âI didnât want to lie to her,â Matt said. âIt was years ago, in Cyprus, and I was trying to impress her.â
âYou were trying to get your leg over, you mean. I should have sent you to Alaska. Anyway, weâre looking at over four thousand judges on our little island.â
When told that the man they hunted might be a judge â Hardy hadnât been certain â Daz had offered to get an internet whizz he knew to do some research. Daz had agreed that a judge was someone whose career could be seriously damaged by a tale of seeking prostitutes. And a judge was someone who could know dangerous people, or at least have the funds and the clout to find such.
âThereâs all manner of different roles and ethnicities,â Daz continued, âso if you could have gotten him pinned down as a mixed-race tribunal judge, for instance, weâd have less than thirty to look at.â
Matt shook his head. He hadnât thought to press Hardy for such details. He convinced himself Hardy wouldnât have known. But it was still an oversight.
Daz poured three cups of tea. âI have my man compiling names and hunting addresses, but letâs put that on the back burner for now. All along I thought you brought me here for my skill and expertise, when really youâre just after my money.â
He was referring to a plan the two men had come up with last night. Matt said, âIf the Watchdogs decide to check on you, theyâll see a successful businessman. Born and bred in Scotland. As long as they donât look back far enough to learn you were in the army with one Matt Armstrong, brother of one of their victims, itâll work.â
âSo whatâs the score with the drug guy you say they set up as the killer?â
Lisa spoke now. âIt doesnât help the Watchdogs to have the police still looking into what theyâre doing. So now and then they probably help the police close a file. They packaged up a dead drug dealer, some nobody called Declan Barthow, and they made it look good.
