E. How to distort memories

49

Many researchers have shown that the eyewitness testimony, in relation to psychic demonstrations, is generally unreliable and can lead to wrong conclusions. There are many factors that can influence the reliability of the eyewitness testimony (Wiseman, 1996), and the pseudopsychic can take advantage of this situation.

25. The psychic is elusive. The claims are always vague and never specific in advance of a demonstration. As said above, this makes it impossible for the observer to know what to look for and, futhermore, after the demonstration it will be impossible to remember exactly what went on.

Especially, if the demonstrations took place in a ’well designed chaos’ (see rule n. 10).

26. The psychic recapitulates often what happened to alter memories. If the psychic declares that he never touched a key when it bent, that’s what people will remember (Fuller, 1975). It will be completely forgotten, for example, that the psychic moved the key from one spot to another, because that movement is considered insignificant, while in reality, that may be the moment when the trick took place. Also, as we said, a psychic may perform the same demonstration several times with the use of a different technique each time. Perci Diaconis (1985, p. 572), in explaining the

"bundle of sticks phenomenon", noted, "the weak points of one performance are ruled out because they were clearly not present during other performances. The bundle of sticks is stronger than any single stick".
