Chapter Nine
Grayson
She's late. Again.
I pounded my feet on the floor, interlaced my fingers tightly, and fixated my gaze on my watch. Resting in the main sitting room, I propped up my legs on the table next to me.
Striking a match, I ignited a cigarette and exhaled, releasing the fragrant smoke into the air. The room was silent, save for the soft melody emanating from my mp3 player. It was the only thing diverting my thoughts from reprimanding my wife.
After forgiving her once, she had brazenly taken me for granted. Maybe I should establish stricter rules. How could I not know her whereabouts? This time, punishing her wouldn't come easily or gently. It would grant me pure satisfaction instead.
I exhaled another puff of smoke, relishing the sensation as it twirled out through my nostrils and mouth. I had no idea why I started smoking in here. It was just an indulgence, a way to revel in my victory over Uncle Bob using my intellect. I had always been sharper and always would be.
I heard the echo of footsteps resonating through the entrance, a familiar rhythm that could only belong to one person - my wife. There was no need for the maid to inform me of her arrival; I could distinguish her gait, her distinct fragrance, and even the cadence of her breath - tender, harsh, and normal.
As her steps drew nearer and her silhouette materialized, she came to an abrupt standstill upon encountering me. A gasp escaped her lips, a clear indication that my presence here, instead of in the dining room, caught her completely off guard.
A lingering silence stretched between us, punctuated only by the melodic strains escaping the MP3 player. Her eyes darted across the room, silently conveying that something was awry. Beads of perspiration formed on her forehead, betrayed nerves betraying her discomfort in facing me. I knew there was a hidden truth she was concealing.
"Where did you go?" I inquired, breaking the stillness.
It took her a moment, wavering between disclosure and evasion, before she finally mustered a response. "I was at the headquarters," she confessed, her gaze avoiding mine as she toyed anxiously with her fingers.
"I had instructed my guards to thoroughly scour every inch for you, but their search was evidently in vain," I interjected, catching her off guard.
"Well, they obviously didn't put enough effort into it!" she retorted.
"I witnessed my SUV dart off," I specifically identified the vehicle before continuing, "and you were inside it!" I interrupted her mid-sentence. Perhaps she had conveniently forgotten that I have surveillance cameras, both visible and concealed, scattered throughout the premises. Her voice wavered as she attempted to respond when I probed, "So, where were you headed, my dear wife?"
"Nowhere!" she finally mustered the words.
"Nowhere in particular?" I raised an eyebrow, exhaling smoke from my cigarette. "Speak up!" I insisted, despising the stifling silence between us.
"I simply paid a visit to an old friend," she finally admitted.
"You don't possess any friends," I declared.
"I do, she used to work as a model, just like me.
