CHAPTER 32

SADIE

It had been a long day, which had ended with Beth sharing my bed with me, after she’d given Bodhi the bedroom she’d been in. It had been years since I’d slept beside someone, and I couldn’t settle, partly for this reason, but mainly because Beth was ridiculously restless when she was unconscious. So, after she’d elbowed me and swiped my pillow from under my head, I gave up trying to get some rest and got up in search of coffee.

“Couldn’t sleep?” My legs buckled when Deakon’s voice came from the darkness of the great room.

I clutched the cup I had in my hand to my chest. “Fuck,” I muttered. “You gave me a fright. What are you doing sitting there in the dark? Why aren’t you in bed?”

“Don’t relish the thought of sleeping with Jude and Esther,” he informed me.

“Ah. I didn’t realize you gave them your bedroom, that was kind of you. So, what are you doing?” I asked, wandering toward his silhouette. “You have this massive house and you’re sleeping on a couch?”

“Not sleeping. Thinking,” he corrected.

“Damn that’s what that annoying noise is? I wondered why I couldn’t nod off.”

He chuckled. “You never give up, huh?”

“Nope.” I heard a note of melancholy in his tone. “What were you thinking about?” I probed.

“Life. My life. Family, the band, Lina moving to Colorado … you,” he confessed.

“Me?” I mumbled and sat on the edge of the couch beside him.

“Yeah. You. What’s going to happen next. How we can help you. Do you want us to get involved with the Jesse situation? Will you leave? How would I feel about that if you did? There are many things going on in my alcohol-sodden brain.”

“You don’t need to worry about me. I can take care of myself,” I said quickly. It was a default sentence I’d used many times with Levi, but in truth I was petrified to strike out on my own. Plus, my heart felt heavy each time I tried to contemplate not being around Levi and lately, more at not being around Deakon.

“How? By living in constant denial and hiding out at Levi’s house? It’s one thing being there by choice, and quite another to believe that’s your only option.”

“It is my only option,” I blurted. “Even if my problem with Jesse miraculously disappeared, I’m not qualified to do anything except housekeeping … and I need a place to live. Just because I told you what happened doesn’t make my problem yours. I’ve managed fine up until now. Besides, I love Levi and taking care of his home for him. You don’t need to think about me.”

Deakon sat up and swung his legs to the floor. “Fuck, Sadie. It’s become impossible for me not to think about you … and also … Levi knows.”

“Knows?” I repeated as panic gripped my chest. “About Jesse?”

Deakon snickered. “No. He knows about us,” he said, wagging a finger between us. “Not everything, but he’s warned me off you.”

“What?” I shrieked, mortified
