After practicing the somatic clearing exercise described above, record your experience in your practice record log. How did it feel? Were you able to feel a physical and emotional shift? How do you feel right now in an emotional sense? How might you incorporate this practice in your life to reap its benefits? Process and reflect in a way that is appropriate for you. This is also a rich time to journal, as often through a somatic release, new emotional insights open up.
Conclusion: Clearing the Way for Heartful Engagement
Recognizing and releasing through mindful awareness pacifies both your mind and body. It subdues your fear-response system and stops the spiral of becoming from spinning out of control. It allows you to use your conscious awareness to be mindful of your entire mind and body experience without placing value on it or judging it. This nonreactive fully-accepting presence stops your typical stimulus-response patterns and allows a new openness to emerge. It allows you to recognize your triggers and physical reactions without succumbing to them, judging them, or suppressing them. It allows you the Power of Pause. It shows you how cultivating a present-moment awareness can ground you in the present instead of leaving you to ruminate on the past, suffer anxiety about the present, or worry about the future. It helps you recognize when new stresses may be surfacing, and it helps you release emotional toxins from both your mind and body, opening up possibilities for another paradigm to emerge. It teaches you how to dialog with the innate wisdom of your body and learn truths that may otherwise have remained buried, and it helps you release residual somatic toxins and balance your system physically. Most importantly, through an embodied approach to recognizing and releasing through mindful awareness, you open up the spaces for heartful engagement to emerge. With a subdued fear-response system, your calm-and-connection system has room to enter and flourish.
In the next chapter, you will be learning and applying the skills of heartful engagement. You will learn what heartful engagement feels like for you from an embodied sense and be able to distinguish the heartful emotions that are strongest for you. You will learn easy skills of implementation and practices so you can foster it in all the moments of your life, as well as sustained practices to cultivate it at a deeper level. As a result of recognizing and releasing through mindful awareness, you now have a system ready for the calm and connection of heartful engagement.
