I’d never felt more ready to get out of the Authority’s inner sanctum than I did right now. I was already in the passenger seat of Duncan’s car by the time he slid behind the wheel.

“Sorry if I made that weird in there,” he started, putting the car into drive.

“I’m the one who should be apologizing to you. I didn’t mean to drag you into my baggage, especially without a heads up.”

“Why do I get the feeling this is more than just a community center?”

“Uh, well, I mean they do some education stuff and support groups, like you saw. Well, someone that used to work there kind of saved my life and helped put me on the path to becoming an agent.”

“Sounds like a really nice place,” he commented.

“It can be a little judgmental sometimes,” I answered.

I’d known about the Authority my entire life. I’d even been to a few magic lessons there in my youth, but it had never felt like a place that wanted me as a child. It certainly hadn’t been so supportive when my magic turned on me. In the Authority’s eyes, Whisperers were seen as victims of their own making. Not bad people necessarily, but the people who used to be in power believed we were deserving of our fate in a way. I’d stayed connected thanks to Desmond, not because of their bureaucratic bullshit.

“So, you dated an ex-con, huh?” he continued.

“It’s complicated. We met in college and then he went off the grid for a while. When he showed back up, an asshole FBI agent coerced him into doing some pretty messed up things. He paid the price for another man’s ego. If I’d had any say in the matter, he wouldn’t have spent a day behind bars.”

“I heard rumors at the academy about an agent that went rogue, tried to kill a cop. That wouldn’t happen to be the same person, would it?”

“Yep. In fact, that cop he tried to kill was one of the people who really pushed me to get my shit together and apply to Quantico in the first place.”

“They must have been proud,” he noted as he pulled into the flow of traffic heading into the city. We were about hit some serious rush-hour traffic.

My breath hitched. “She died in the line of duty, but I do like to think she would have approved of my career choices.”

“Damn, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. She knew what she was getting into.” I couldn’t tell him she’d literally been fated to die. That was veering way too close into spilling the magical beans territory.

“So, how do you think your ex can help us figure out how our mastermind is recruiting folks?”

I spotted a sign for a diner at the next exit. “How about I fill you in over some real coffee and breakfast?”

“Sounds good to me.”
