Norman groaned and stirred restlessly a couple of times. The doctor arrived with oxygen and a blanket, and made a call that he said he hoped would speed up the ambulance.
âBut once you get stuck in traffic, it can be near enough impossible,â he warned them.
Amaryllis got to her feet to give her knees a rest, and Keith joined her as the doctor carried out some basic checks. A miniature crowd had gathered on the opposite pavement by now, and inevitably Amaryllis recognised Dave and Jemima among their number. Jemima gave a little wave, while Dave tried to pretend he wasnât there, which was a difficult thing for someone with his large presence to do.
The police reinforcements appeared soon after the ambulance. The police were allowed to speak to Norman for a few minutes once he had been checked over again by the paramedics and loaded into the vehicle.
Keith told Amaryllis in a quiet aside that Norman had also thought it was a man driving the dark car, but he wasnât saying any more about the car itself or about any enemies he might have made recently.
âI wonder where his sidekick is today,â she said. âIâve never seen them separately. Theyâre always together.â
âDo you have a name for the sidekick?â
âSandy,â she said apologetically. âWe havenât been formally introduced yet. It was first names only.â
âThatâs a pity.â
Keith called one of the uniformed officers over and asked him to try and find out more about Norman and Sandy, such as, Amaryllis assumed, whether either or both of them had a criminal record. She wouldnât have been surprised if they did, although the jury was still out on whether they had been engaged in criminal activity in and around Pitkirtly.
âWhile youâre here,â she said to Keith, trying to sound casual, âI donât suppose youâve heard anything about Rosieâs whereabouts. Or what Inspector Armstrongâs doing these days?â
He gave her a look. âYou know I canât comment on any live cases.â
âSo you think Rosieâs disappearance and Inspector Armstrongâs activities are connected with a live case, do you?â
He laughed. âNo comment.â
âWe couldâve reported Rosie officially missing by now, if weâd ever found the police station open,â grumbled Amaryllis.
âGo ahead,â said Keith. âYou can do it online now if you want. Or call it in. But Mrs Ramsay isnât going to be pleased if it turns out she isnât missing at all but hiding out somewhere for her own reasons.â
âWhat if the reasons have something to do with a case?â said Amaryllis.
âThen of course weâd want to interview her,â said Keith.
âBut youâd have to find her first.â
He hesitated before replying, perhaps fearful of some sort of trick on her part.
âI suppose we would.â
âWhy donât you start looking now, then?â
âThereâs no evidence to suggest sheâs involved in anything,â said Keith in exasperation.
âOf course there isnât, because you havenât looked for any.â
To Keithâs evident relief, he was called away at that moment, first by a phone call and then by a query from one of the other officers.
Amaryllis had
