CHAPTER 8
ALL NEW!
The next session came around and we followed the same routine, queuing at the gate after lunch and being escorted to the chapel. A couple of the lads from the workshop had decided it wasnât for them, but I wanted to fire off some more questions. I was determined to catch these Christians out.
We sat down and had our coffee and biscuits â custard creams this time. Then the TV came out and Nicky Gumbel started his talk. It was about Jesus.
Now, I already believed in God. I didnât need any convincing on that score. But my idea of God was the one I had been given through school assemblies and religious education. God was someone or something that had created everything we see around us; thatâs as far as my understanding went. But the whole Jesus issue â well, that was another story for me. Iâd always thought of Him as a good guy who had done good things. And I guess I thought that people â Christians â tried to do what He did so that they could be good too. But they started to explain that Jesus wasnât just a good man, Heâs God in the flesh. They said that Heâd come to earth for one purpose: to put all the things right that I, Darrell, had ever done wrong. This got my attention.
We looked at loads of historical evidence, and at the things Jesus did and said. In prison, you become a bit of a legal expert, and you swap deposition papers and look at each otherâs cases. What I could see from the evidence about Jesus was that everything pointed to one fact: Jesus was who Heâd said He was! It was amazing. These people who I thought had hidden away from life and didnât know anything were showing me something I thought was not possible â that God cared about me.
The second part of the session was all about how and why Jesus had died. We all knew the story from school, but for me it was just that, a story, until now. I couldnât argue my point of view that Jesus was merely a good guy any more, because everything about Him, everything He did, everything He said, meant that He was either the Son of God, or an absolute nut job. And when they began showing us how Jesus had died it really hit home.
For a start, it really struck me that He didnât have to go back to Jerusalem. He knew what they were going to do to Him there, and He walked right into it on purpose. If that were me, I wouldnât have gone back; Iâd have legged it. It would be like a gang having money on your head and you purposely walking around on their patch. You just donât do it! The second thing that got me was that He knew He was going to be crucified. This is the sickest way of killing people that humankind has ever dreamt up.
