Chapter Sixteen
Pregnant. The one word that changes everything keeps flashing through my mind. This is what Iâve always wanted. What Iâve always dreamed of: finding a husband, settling down, having children. I may not have the white picket fence and the safe, boring husband, but I wouldnât swap T for anyone in the world. I want his children. Of course I want his children.
Why the hell am I not over the moon about this? I look at Theo, who hasnât been able to wipe the smile off his face since we found out about our impending doom. No, not doom⦠our impending bundle of joy. This is a blessing. I need to start thinking of it that way. And stop thinking that itâs the end of life as I know it.
I should call Reilly. She always knows what to say to get me out of my own head. And thatâs all this is. Iâm stuck in my own negative mindset. I love kids. Iâm a teacherâof course I love kids. I canât for the life of me figure out what my hang-ups about this are. I love my husband, and I know he loves me. And I know that he will be a great dad.
âHere, drink this.â I mindlessly take the hot cup of coffee from T and sip, which very quickly comes flying back out of my mouth.
âWhat the bloody hell is this?â I ask, inspecting the cup. It looks like coffee; it smells like coffee. But itâs certainly not coffee.
âItâs decaf. I just read that you canât drink caffeine while youâre pregnant, so I had all the coffee in the house thrown out,â T says proudly.
âYou what? Oh, Lord. Please, someone tell me Iâm on some prank show and youâre joking. You are joking, right?â
âNope. Iâm fully invested in doing this pregnancy thing with you. If you canât drink caffeine, then neither can I.â
âT, you literally have a house full of Italians. Italians who are very freaking fond of their coffee.â
âThey can get it elsewhere.â He shrugs like itâs no big deal.
âArgh, nope. I cannot give up coffee. I wonât. No way.â
âWe will do this together, dolcezza.â
âEasy for you to say. Youâre not the one whoâs going to be the size of a house and pushing something the size of a watermelon out your vagina.â
He visibly shudders and screws his face up. âWhat are your thoughts on C-sections?â
I send him my best donât fuck with me glare.
âKidding. Itâll be fine. Your body is designed to handle this, Holly.â
âArgh, shoot me now!â I groan. This is going to be the longest nine months of my freaking life. I watch T walk over to the bar and pour a glass of whiskey. I smile at the pain Iâm about to inflict on him. I stand, take the glass from him, and pour the whiskey back into the decanter. âYou canât drink alcohol. Weâre pregnant, remember? Pregnant people canât drink alcohol.â
He blinks a few times before he smiles. âFine, I donât need it anyway.
