Reagan was tired all the way to her bones. In five minutes, she could flip the Open sign to Closed and lock the bakery...if she didn’t pass out from exhaustion first.

She took a spray bottle and clean cloth over to the three café tables and wiped them down. Then she cleaned the chairs and put away the supplies. The bakery was open from seven in the morning until two in the afternoon. Add the hours of baking earlier and it had been the longest ten hours of her life.

It wasn’t that she hadn’t enjoyed it. She had. Making all the baked goods with Marc this morning had been fun, informative—even flirty. Every day she learned something new about him. All the tidbits were adding up to give her a better picture of who he was. When he’d left before the bakery opened to relieve Rico from cattle duty, Reagan had immediately missed him.

Everyone who’d come in to the bakery had been welcoming. She’d spent hour after hour filling bags and boxes with donuts and pies and everything else. The register hadn’t been too complicated, and what she didn’t know, the customers had been eager to explain. It had been really nice to get to know the residents of Jewel River better.

The only thing she was confused about had nothing to do with Marc or baking or customers. It had happened earlier, when she’d toured the bakery. It had been so sudden and unexpected that she still hadn’t processed it.

When she’d walked through the space, she’d instantly pictured the interior of Annie’s Bakery, from the front to the rear, completely reconfigured to be her chocolate shop.

As it was, the bakery was functional and cozy and smelled delicious. But somehow, in a flash, she’d mentally reconfigured the layout, redecorated it and replaced the current bakery display with her chocolate display cases. The front wall? Gone. It would be replaced with large windows and a glass door to let in light. Those three café tables? No room—and no need—for them.

The vision of her chocolate shop still blazed in her mind. And she didn’t know what to do with it.

Reagan checked the time and decided to lock up a few minutes early. If even one more customer came in, she’d collapse in a heap on the floor and start whimpering. She was just that tired.

She was almost to the door when it opened. No way. I’m telling them we’re closed. I can’t fake a smile right now. I can’t. I just can’t.

But to her surprise, Erica and Gemma entered the store.

“Quick, flip over the sign!” Reagan pointed to the door. “Before anyone else comes in.”

Erica’s eyes grew round, but she backtracked and flipped the sign. “Want me to lock the door?”

“Yes.” She resumed her spot behind the counter, took out two large donut boxes and began filling them with the few leftovers that hadn’t sold. “You’re taking these home with you.”

“But Gemma already made me snickerdoodles.”

“That’s true. I did, dear.” Gemma pulled out a chair and groaned.
