The world famous UNIQUE truck and trailer providing door to door service for clients.

Remember, there was nothing else except the cable show. There was no social media in 2005. You had to turn on the box. Nobody saw this coming. They just saw this Puerto Rican guy from the Lower East Side and Long Island doing all these celebrities’ cars, and I was suddenly getting phone calls from every basketball team, baseball team. It was amazing. It was the best time of my life. It was an experience, and I started to treat my guys to this, treat my guys to that, take them on trips across the country. It was the greatest time of our lives. It didn’t mean there were not issues. When you’re successful, you have to be aware of betrayal. Dishonesty can rear its ugly head. I recall one time when I returned back to Unique after attending a Barrett-Jackson auto auction to find that a two-thousand-dollar Alpine radio went missing from my inventory while I was away. Reme told me he didn’t know what happened, but I knew somebody on the team had betrayed me. There’s a trust that is built when you are putting food on someone’s table and you are part of a team, a trust that should never be broken. Suddenly, it was. I waited until the television cameras were rolling, and I pulled all six of my employees in front of the cameras to confront them about the missing merchandise. It’s all documented in an episode of Unique Whips. One of my guys, who was like a nephew to me and who I had mentored and treated like family, admitted to the theft, and I fired him on the spot, making him take off his Unique T-shirt and leave it with me before he left. Years later when I was living in Miami, this guy came to me to clear the air, and I accepted his apology and his version of events, but our relationship was torn by permanent fractures. This is why loyalty, above all else, is so important.

“This is why loyalty, above all else, is so important.”

As Unique Whips was blowing up my brand on television, hip-hop was blowing up around the nation and the world. During that period of time, there was a lot of rivalry in hip-hop; groups were not getting along with one another, because it was so competitive. They used to do battles, but nobody would kill each other because you’d put the competition in a song or in a rhyme. You know what I’m saying? One would come out with another record or another rhyme and try to outdo the other: a competitive battle of rapping. And some people were just a little too sensitive or whatever it might have been, and they wanted to take it to the next level, wanted to make a name for themselves.

And then that’s when things started getting nasty and dangerous. And this was after Biggie Smalls’ murder. Cliques were not getting along with one another.
