Chapter 12

“You make the introductions,” I said to Lailah as we walked to Tabitha’s hotel. “I expect you know most of the wedding guests better than I do.”

Lailah nodded. “I’ve met most of them once or twice at different events. Ceremony officiants get around.”

I chuckled.

Her cheeks flushed. “I don’t mean like that!”

“Of course not. You must meet interesting people doing your job.”

“And not so interesting. There’s always one person at an event who’s the resident expert on something that’s less than fascinating. I remember a painful conversation about the merits of different wax to make angel wings shine. I learned about fifteen different waxes! And I’m always too polite to tell anyone to put a sock in it.”

There was a crash as we entered through the hotel door and then a low male laugh in a room off to our right.

Tabitha wasn’t on the reception desk, so I headed along the corridor and poked my head around the door.

Lailah followed me. “That’s Elyon. He was Irin’s boyfriend.”

I took a few seconds to admire the impressive physical form of the angel who was bent over picking up a bowl of fruit. He was muscular, blond, and wore a pair of faded dark jeans and an open-necked white shirt under a leather jacket. He was giving off some seriously rocker style angel vibes. I approved.

“He looks younger than Irin,” I said.

Lailah nodded. “He is.”

I put on my detective’s hat, deciding it was unprofessional to leer too long at a suspect, and headed over to Elyon with Lailah and Wiggles.

He turned as we approached, his bright blue eyes looking bleary. “Sorry about the fruit. I’ll pay for any damage. I knocked the bowl with my elbow. It was clumsy of me.”

“Hi, Elyon. I don’t know if you remember me. I’m Lailah. I officiated at the wedding yesterday.”

Elyon squinted at her then nodded. “Sure. It was a great ceremony. I mean until Irin’s murder. That wasn’t so good.” He reached for a glass of red wine and took a sip.

“I’m so sorry for your loss,” Lailah said. “How are you coping?”

“With this.” He raised his glass. “It’s helping a lot.”

“This is Tempest Crypt.” Lailah gestured to me. “She’s in charge of the investigation into Irin’s murder.”

Elyon’s gaze ran over me. “The angels aren’t investigating?”

“Not this time. It’s a bit too close to home. I work freelance for them, and they asked me to give them a hand,” I said.

“Sure. I guess that makes sense.” He wiggled his fingers in my face. “Especially with that pretty mark on your forehead. I see you’re in with the higher angels. Good for you.”

“I know you were spoken to right after the murder, but I need to ask you a few more questions about Irin,” I said. “Do you mind?”

“Of course not. I talked to an angel the night it happened. Then some scary witch told me not to leave the village or there’d be trouble. Does she work with you?”

I smiled. “In a way. My family was at the wedding, and they helped after Irin was discovered.
