Monday, March 25, 2019, The Condos at Del Mar Highlands
Kiara Blake lived in a small condo development perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific in Del Mar. There were three small buildings of nine units each. Cam easily found hers in Building Three on the third floor at four oâclock that afternoon.
She opened the door and invited him into the living room with the ocean view and motioned for him to take a seat on the sofa.
âIâm making coffee. Want some?â
Cam said yes to be polite and proceeded to divide his waiting time between watching the waves wear away the beach below and studying Kiaraâs six-one, curvy frame through the pass-through to the kitchen as she measured coffee and added water to the pot. She was wearing khaki shorts and a simple white T-shirt and brown leather sandals. Her long blond hair was wound into a messy bun at the nape of her neck. She wasnât wearing any makeup, but she didnât need any. She was a strikingly gorgeous woman. Cam could easily picture her rising from Noraâs pool like Venus rising from the sea to entice Michael Bernstein into giving her the lead in the new movie.
âHere you go.â She handed him a mug and sat down on the opposite end of the couch. She sipped her own coffee thoughtfully for a moment before she said, âPoor Nora.â
âWere the two of you friends?â
âMaybe in the beginning when I first went to work for her. She was generous in helping new talent when it suited her, and it suited her with me.â
âBut that changed?â Cam sipped his coffee which was surprisingly good.
âIt did. Youâve talked to Sonia and to Michael. You know the whole story about me and Lachlan and the sequel.â
âDidnât that seem disloyal to you? Going behind Noraâs back to take something she wanted after sheâd helped you?â Who am I to talk about loyalty when my wife is on the other side of the country, and Iâm obsessed with another woman?
âSome people would call it disloyal. I didnât.â
âWhy? Because it benefitted you?â
âYes, but it benefitted Nora, too.â
âYour sleeping with her husband and taking her role in the film benefitted her?â
âLook, she and Lachlan were long over. She was the only one who didnât know it. And he had never been faithful to her or to any woman. Iâm sure his daughter has told you that.â
âShe has.â The reference to Raven made him uncomfortable as it always did. Cam concentrated on keeping his face neutral. âBut you still havenât told me why you think your relationship with my client benefitted Nora.â
âBecause I was the right person for the lead. I would make the project successful. Nora would have had more than enough money to start that production company she wanted so badly if only sheâd been smart enough to take the share of the profits Michael offered her instead of trying to block everything.â
âSonia and Michael had doubts about your ability to carry the movie.â
âI know.â She polished off her coffee and set her mug on the table decisively.
