Chapter 13

It was in the early hours of the night, long before the sun would rise above the castle walls, when Mirco found himself wandering through cold corridors once again. He had been tossing and turning in his bed all night, unable to sleep after what happened with Keyla and Wilkin, until he eventually decided he had enough. He got up and left his room, figuring that aimlessly walking through the castle would be a better way to spend his night than staring at a ceiling.

It had been just that for the first hour or two; aimlessly walking around in the hope of distracting his mind from all the horrible things he had done. Yet, with only the empty hallways and his own thoughts to keep him company, it didn't take long for his mind to circle back to his conversation with Keyla.

At first, he was delighted that he had managed to convince Keyla to let him save the servants. However, the longer he thought about it, the more he wondered about what was behind Keyla's open-minded facade. She had already admitted that there were still things she wasn't telling him, an agenda of her own. Motives, Mirco thought, even Wilkin might not fully understand.

Unfortunately for Keyla, Mirco wanted to know everything. Every single detail, every single reason. He would never be able to fully trust her if he didn't.

Suddenly, he remembered the tapestry in Keyla's living quarters and the hidden entrance behind it. The king had mentioned it before, the first time they spoke about Princess Keyla. He told him they had used it to obtain all the information they needed from Keyla by looking through all the documents and reports she had brought with her. Which, from Mirco’s visit to Keyla’s sleeping quarters earlier, were quite a few. The chance that they had missed something in the absolute chaos of papers and reports was rather big.

The decision was made in a split second. He had to find out what Keyla was hiding, one way or another. And if that way had to be by sneaking into Keyla’s room, then so be it.

He swiftly turned around and continued walking in the opposite direction. The quick turn would've been a weird sight, but luckily for him, beside the occasional guard on night duty, there was barely anyone around to witness it. He had the corridors almost to himself, which was useful for what he was planning.

He walked for a few minutes until he reached the same intersection at which he bid Princess Nipha a good night just a few hours earlier. In silence, he waited, contemplating whether he was doing the right thing.

What if Keyla discovered him?

She had been crystal clear about what would happen if he would ever betray her; she would kill him. Executed like the rest of his family. Yet, that wasn't what scared Mirco the most. He wasn't just putting his life at risk if he went into Keyla's room; he was also risking the lives of everyone he tried to save.
