Reg made all the arrangements that she could think of. Francesca could come by and feed the cats. Reg took her date book over to Sarah and explained that she’d be gone for a day or two, but everything was taken care of and she didn’t need to worry about taking care of Starlight or anything else at the cottage. Hopefully, that would keep Sarah from popping by the house while Reg was gone and discovering that Horace—a bigger and more dangerous Horace—was back once more. It was only for a day or two. Then Reg could get everything straightened out.

Even while she prepared herself for the leap to Egypt, Reg couldn’t totally banish the problems that Horace presented from her thoughts. How was she supposed to keep him from entering her dreams—or anyone else’s—in the future? Starlight had protected her from death by kattakyns twice now, but could she really expect him to always be keeping an eye on her? How could she keep Horace from returning to her house, no matter what kind of home she found for him?

She knew that she was avoiding the real question. Corvin had talked to her, back in the beginning when they first became aware that the Witch Doctor was raising draugrs, about the difficulty of fighting them. There were only a couple of ways to completely kill a draugr. Since they were dead already, most methods didn’t have any effect on them. The Vikings had tried to bury bodies deep down underground, with a big tombstone over the grave, to make sure that bodies could not rise again. But that hadn’t stopped them.

There was such a disconnect in Reg’s mind between the kattakyns and the hideous draugr giants. As if they were two separate beings instead of two different physical forms of the same creature. She couldn’t imagine using one of those methods on the cats that she had grown to love. Horace could kill her. It was part of his makeup. But she couldn’t even think of hurting him.

She picked up her bag and closed her eyes, trying to calm the rapid beating of her heart and to focus her thoughts on Egypt instead of worrying about Horace. Horace would have to wait until she got back. Maybe if she let the problem simmer in the back of her mind for a couple of days, her unconscious mind would come up with an effortless solution all on its own.

Reg held the gems in the plastic bag in her hand, deep in the pocket of her skirt. With the other hand, she touched the rings, stroking across them with her thumb. She inhaled deeply, remembering the feeling and the smell of the drier air in Egypt. She remembered the heat of the sun on her skin. The pungent smells. The cadences of the language she couldn’t understand.

And then she was there.
