He hated leaving Breya behind, but with her shoulder wound and not knowing what he and Vika Tor may encounter, knew it was for the best. Turning the corner, he and Vika entered the right hand of the âTâ junction which continued only a short distance before turning sharply to the left.
Following the passage around the corner, they saw where it came to a dead end some thirty feet further. A solid looking wooden door stood ajar on the right not far from where the passage came to an end. The flicker of firelight came through the crack from the other side.
Vika Tor brought them to a halt as he turned his gaze upon Lord Michael.
âWe donât have time to mess around,â the baron said. Usually the one to err on the side of caution, he knew Parr couldnât hold the door closed against the creatures indefinitely. âIf thereâs light, that means someone is there.â
Giving Lord Michael a grin and a nod, Vika Tor drew his sword and led the way forward. As he came nearer the door, he heard Lord Michaelâs sword leave its sheathe as well. He stopped inches away from the opening and took a second to listen. All he could hear was the sound of breathing and the crackle of fire.
âI think there is only a single individual in there,â he whispered to the baron.
âThen letâs not waste time,â urged Lord Michael.
Vika Tor moved to look through the crack but failed to see anything other than it was a room which lay beyond the door. A fireplace in the opposite wall held a crackling fire, there was a steaming pot hanging on a hook above the fire, and a large table situated between the door and the fireplace.
âReady?â he asked Lord Michael. Upon receiving the baronâs affirmative, he placed his hand upon the door and gave a hard push. The door swung open a foot before coming to an abrupt halt. A grunt was heard from the other side before the door slammed shut with a resounding thud.
âWhatâ¦,â began Vika Tor when the door was suddenly impacted by a resounding blow from the other side. A vertical crack appeared running the height of the door.
Taking a step backward, the two men watched in wonder as another powerful blow disintegrated the door before their eyes. A large wooden club bound in iron followed the debris into the passage. A second later, another of the giant creatures they had encountered earlier emerged. Turning its sights on them, it made a low growling noise deep in its throat.
âBack up,â advised Lord Michael. Sword held before him at the ready, he began stepping backward.
Vika Tor matched him step for step. They both knew from their previous encounter with a similar creature, that there was little chance of vanquishing it. Nor was there time to formulate and execute a plan to get past. When the creature made a guttural noise and moved toward them with club held in a threatening manner, they turned and fled.
