There were so many millions of bones in the Catacombs that, from 1810, the Paris Mine Inspector, Louis-Ãtienne Héricart de Thury, decided to convert the site into a mausoleum which would be a memorial place to visit. Following some earlier traditions of arranging bones more decoratively, de Thury ordered skulls and femurs to be stacked into intricate patterns.
