The transit hub Châtelet–Les Halles now sees 750,000 passengers passing through it every day, making it Europe’s busiest underground rail station; whilst the shopping centre gets up to 150,000 daily visitors.

There were so many millions of bones in the Catacombs that, from 1810, the Paris Mine Inspector, Louis-Étienne Héricart de Thury, decided to convert the site into a mausoleum which would be a memorial place to visit. Following some earlier traditions of arranging bones more decoratively, de Thury ordered skulls and femurs to be stacked into intricate patterns.
